Do you think CalSO is REALLY worth it ?

I know that this is when you are supposed to talk to counselors and advisers about classes you are interested in registering, but with a sticker price of 210 dollar + a plane ticket since I live in socal, this isnt really given.. So i was just wondering if i truly needed to attend calso. Thanks a lot

Yes CalSO is worth it. Also, there is supposed to be SoCalSO that is cheaper and in SoCal.

drive up. if you don’t take calso you get your adviser code after everyone else who went - aka you become best friends with the waitlist.

lol the drive takes 10 hours with breaks… not very convenient

And don’t worry, I’ll be your friend along with the waitlists.

haha do you think these classes are likely to be waitlisted ?

chem 1a
espm 2
espm 50 ac or anthro 2ac
earth and planetary science 39 a

I didn’t go to Calso and it stressed the hell out of me, so honestly I would try going. Where are you from in socal? 10 hours, you must drive like my grandma. chem1a and espm will be waitlisted up to your eyeballs, espm waitlist approaching class size. I don’t know about the others.

Chem 1A fills up pretty fast, as well as ESPM 50AC. Don’t know about the others.

i live in san diego. 10 hours include breaks such as lunch and bathroom lol… otherwise if its just driving non stop its about 7 and a half.

Also, i was accepted into the college of L&S but im thinking of switching to CNR. The thing is CNR’s first session is june 15 while L&S starts the 5th. Would you recommend going to the L&S one the 5th and tell them im interested in switching to CNR or go to the CNR one the 15th, knowing thats 10 days lost and so more probability for me being waitlisted ?

If you switch to CNR, make sure it’s what you REALLY want b/c it’s hard to switch back. You can take lower divs for CNR while still in L&S to get a feel for it.

I’m not sure but I don’t think you can transfer between colleges yet so you’d have to attend the L&S one anyway.

CNR seems more appealing to me since there are less people going there aka less competition. If i do end up stayin in L&S, my major would be something in MCB (immunology, biochem…) but if i go to CNR, id major in Molecular and environmental biology or microbial biology. I dont think it makes much of a difference, i just heard MCB was really competitive.

Make sure that you go to CalSO because you need that course-signup code. Think of it this way - a semester’s tuition, not even counting living expenses, is $3500. If you take four classes, that means that it’s about $875 a class. It depends how you reason things out, but it makes that $210 seem small compared to not being able to get into a course you want/need.

fair enough. ill just go on the first day the 5th then as an L&S undergrad and go from there

yep be sure to lay out your desired schedule ahead of time so you know exactly which course codes to enter

“I want to change colleges. Can I sign up for a different college’s CalSO session? Can I change colleges at CalSO?
Change of college cannot be considered until you start school. You must attend a CalSO session for the specific college to which you were admitted.”

yes it’s a great time if you never visited cal before.

i’m an international student so i really think i cannot go…
is the disadvantage really great when it comes to scheduling if i don’t go?

Can I get info on CalSO? When is it? How much money? When and where’s the So Cal one?

210 is not a lot of money for what you are getting
