I am looking to attend a large university, preferably in Illinois (where I am from). I am going to be in senior in high school. I have one unemployed parent with my other parent making roughly $40,000 a year. I am in a family of 5, one of which will also be looking at college next year as we are twins. Do you think we would be able to get any financial aid for college?

Yes - but I would definitely not hang my hopes on getting enough financial aid to attend any Illinois public college as a resident student, given the precarious nature of the state’s finances. It is likely with that income you could get a Pell grant. You’d qualify for Stafford loan and most likely for work study money. If you were to live at home, those would probably pay your tuition at one of the non-U of I state colleges, and possibly at one of the U of I campuses.

Do you and/or your twin have high enough stats that you could get good merit scholarships or get accepted to the schools that “meet need”?
