Do you think I can get into schools like Cal Poly SLO/UCSD/UCSB

Okay, here’s everything:

-High School Junior
-I go to one of the top ranked public high schools in California(consistently top 10)
-1475 SAT
-Plan on taking and doing well on SAT math 2 and SAT physics
-Varsity Letter in 2 sports
-I will be doing a 150 hr summer internship related to some field of engineering
-I have taken 2 years of engineering/design technology classes, one of them being an IB class
-I have taken 7 other AP/IB classes
-So far I have done 150-200 hrs of volunteer work with a STEM youth program

However, the one thing that is lacking is my gpa. With the UC calculated gpa, I can only get a 3.75 weighted for grades 10-11. I would be the happiest kid in the world if I could get accepted into any of these schools.

Do you guys still think I have a chance?

1475 SAT? Are you super scoring your SAT since SLO is the only school that will superscore. Did you use the Roger Hub UC GPA calculator? What is your unweighted UC GPA vs. capped weighted? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

Your SAT looks competitive but your GPA is lacking. Cal Poly SLO uses 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation so input your Freshman grades to get your CP GPA.

UC’s are very GPA focused and SLO Engineering is a tough admit even with a high SAT.

Your GPA will be taken in context with the competitiveness of your school but you want to strive for a UC GPA of 4.0 for the best chances as an Engineering major.

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:

UCB: 2%
UCLA: 3%
UCSD: 6%
UCD: 11%
UCSB: 13%
UCI: 16%
UCSC: 47%
UCR: 64%
UCM: 80%

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:

UCB: 12%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 39%
UCSB: 49%
UCD: 52%
UCI: 57%
UCSC: 83%
UCR: 90%
UCM: 92%

SLO Freshman profile for Engineering:

Average CP GPA: 4.17 Average ACT: 33 Average SAT: 1450

I would say a High Match to Low Reach if your GPA is below a 4.0

Thank you for the great reply! The SAT is not super scored as I have only taken it once and yes I have used the Roger gpa calculator. I’ve just been stressing out a lot lately because I assumed that my gpa was a 4.05-4.1 weighted and just recently found out that UC schools use a special gpa calculating method so I kinda feel like I’m screwed right now.

Definitely worth applying to these schools but as long as a college is ABET accredited for their Engineering programs, you can get a good education at UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego State, San Jose State, CSU Fullerton and possibly UC Irvine. Apply widely to have a better choice of options. What is your unweighted UC GPA?

Is that a typo on the SAT since it’s impossible to get a score with an increment of 5?

And based on the GPA the best bet UCs are Merced and Riverside, although Santa Cruz would be worth applying to as well.

Yes the sat was a type it’s a 1470 I was typing that as I was calculating the weighted gpa. UW gpa is a 3.35 :frowning: And I I will definitely be applying to more California schools such as csulb, ucsc, ucr, san diego state.

I’m not a pro at this but I have seen people with sports get rejected. Your GPA seems a little bit low for weighted, you might want to recheck that. Most of the time for a competitive GPA it should be around 4.2+. Also from my experience, SAT IIs don’t really help the application a lot since everyone takes those (just my opinion). I think your extracurriculars are pretty solid considering that it is a internship and not just a volunteering experience (be sure to write about this unique opportunity in your essay). If you can’t bring your GPA up then just make sure you have good essays and I think you have a fair chance. Good luck  and take my opinion with a grain of salt since you never know who is going to be accepted and who is not.
