I'm really nervous that I won't get in! Do you think I can?

All Pre-IB classes freshman and sophmore year, IB classes junior and Senior year
All I ever got were As and Bs and one C in freshman year for history
ACT 28 (math 28 science 27)
Rank is 18/376 (top 5%)
Extracurricular-
-National Honors Society
-Academic Decathlon
-Cross Country
-Computer science club
-Senior Mentor
Volunteer all summer in public library
Volunteer for International day performance at high school

Your ACT is higher than the average UIUC score (22) and your rank is good too. Considering you have leadership (mentor) and something career oriented (your club), you shouldn’t have much a problem, as long as you write really good essays. Remember UIUC is one of the top schools for CS or computer engg. so make sure your passion for computers comes through. Of course, your grades matter the most, so what is your IB score? Your rank is 18 so I’m assuming mid-30s?

Ask yourself, does that even pass the logic test? UIUC is one of the best schools in the country. For that reason alone you should know that the average ACT is NOT anywhere close to a 22.

And, as PurpleTitan writes, the avg for UIUC engineering is a 32+ which is also what someone could practically guess based on UIUC’s rep for engineering.

I have heard the CS at UIUC engineering was super competitive last year. The average admission ACT went up from 32.xx to 34.xx. With ACT 28, it would be a very super high reach.
Note that UIUC is admit by major, CS is one of the most competitive program there. The admission stat is above the overall engineering school.

@billcsho, granted the OP is interested in CompE, which I believe is not as competitive to get in to as CS (but has harder classes). Dunno how much less competitive, though.

Oops. Actually CS is probably the most competitive program at UIUC. Someone said the admission rate last year was in single digit. The year before (2013), the UIUC COE overall admission rate was still 60%. It should be lower in 2014, but the single digit rate for CS is at least several fold lower than some other engineering majors.

Well, if that 60% is accurate it’s due to a self selecting group that applies in the first place. Good luck OP but I agree that your ACT is probably low. But, with U of I you never know…

I wouldn’t be that attracted to UIUC…I’m here for my freshman year (because I thought I liked it when visiting) and am already strongly considering a transfer after first semester. Unless you are going to join Greek Life and want to drink/party as much as possible, there isn’t really anything to do here.
