Do you think I could get in?

Note: This is basically a copy a post I made in the "Chances?" category. I never knew that I was able to ask questions here directly.
I really want to know where I am; I hope I don't overestimate myself and my expectations. Going to Stanford has always been my dream school ever since I visited the school in 2007. It's fairly close to my house and I want to stay near my family. My backup would be UC Berkeley, UCLA, or UC Davis. Majoring in Pre-med!

To sum it up, I think I'll do pretty well on this portion of the application, but my ecs are weak compared to those I've seen on this site... I focused less on ECs freshman and sophomore year because I wanted to do well academically.

ECs:
The numbers in parenthesis ( ) indicate the grade or grades participated

Volunteering:
Elderly home (7-12) around 400 hours
Local hospital (9-12) As a leader, my role is to create groups and assignments for the volunteers. I spend about 25 hours a week here during the school year. Total: 500? Hours
This summer: a 1 week medical research/interaction camp in L.A.
Currently trying to volunteer at the Stanford hospital and/or participate in a program at Stanford.
I talked to a surgeon from my local hospital, and he said he'll let me know if someone he knows is creating an event/research or something

Well, yeah, this is it. I put a lot of effort into my grades and extracurriculars, so hopefully it pays off.
Like many other students, I really want to go to Stanford and I would do anything it takes.
Also, I plan to do Stanford REA.
I know the acceptance rate is a bare 5%.:(
If you have the time, I'd like a chance for UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC Davis too. ^_^
Pre-med major
Thanks for your time.

Wow. I think you have a great chance. You have made some good choices for safeties. Good luck!

You should still apply to Stanford. Do you have the stats to get in? Yes. Does that mean you’ll get in? No
Stanford is a reach for everyone, so no one can accurately say whether or not you’ll get in. You won’t know until you apply. There’s nothing you can really do about your EC (which aren’t even bad) at the present moment. Start focusing on your essays.

To be honest, I wouldn’t even compare myself to the kids on this site. Show Stanford why they should pick YOU instead of everyone else through your essays.

Doesn’t CA have the rule that if your in the top 9% of your class that you’ll get into at least 1 UC? Your stats are well above the average for all three of the UCs on your list, so I wouldn’t worry too much about getting into at least one of them.

Thanks, and idk about the 9% thing but I’m not so worried about UCs.’

you have such great stats! also your ec’s are pretty good. you have a great chance of getting into stanford, and def berkeley! chance me back please? http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1674376-i-really-need-help-please.html</a></p>

Sorry, I just saw this, but thanks! ^_^

@Dream0n Gurl please. Don’t even worry about it. You do you, and if you are genuinely intent on contributing to Stanford you WILL GET IN!

Note that pre-med is not a major. Most pre-meds major in something related to biology, but a pre-med can major in nearly anything, so long as they also complete the pre-med course requirements. For example, I majored in electrical engineering at Stanford, while also doing the pre-med courses.

Honestly… if you look through the decision threads, CC posters who have near perfect stats combined with ECs/awards/passions/out of classroom activities that are not impressive on at least a regional level do not have a high acceptance rate. And being an Asian woman interested in pre-med is not exactly an underrepresented group among Stanford applicants. However, I’d still recommend applying. You have a tremendously better chance of acceptance than the overall applicant pool, certainly high enough to take the time to apply.

I like these ideas. If you are passionate about medicine, I’d suggest trying to get involved in some medicine related activities outside of the classroom/HS, and hopefully accomplish some amazing things in those areas, more than just logging volunteer hours.

@Data10‌ thanks for the chance! It’s great to hear from a Stanford student. Haha, I knew “pre-med” was just a set of classes required for med school, but thanks for pointing it out. My ECs might not be the best but there isn’t much time before SCEA. I’m curious, what were your stats/ECs? Thanks again for your suggestions :).

I am not a current student. I was admitted several years ago, with overall stats towards the bottom of my class. Some of my stats were almost literally at the bottom of my entering class, including a CR score in the bottom 1% of my entering class. However, my scores were exceptional in any areas related to my planned engineering major, including 800 math / 800 math II / ~800 chem (don’t recall score) … This might have meant more coming from a typical public HS, where most students fail the state regents exam in math.

My HS did not offer many AP classes, so when I ran out of challenging classes that interested me in my HS, I took classes at nearby universities, such as RPI and SUNYA, some up to ~sophomore level. I had a 4.0 on these classes and a glowing LOR from one of my college professors. I didn’t just take the typical college classes that HS students often choose to graduate faster. I chose some classes only because I found them interesting, classes that had no Stanford equivalent and had nothing to do with my planned major. For example, I particularly enjoyed a class related to behavioral neuroscience at SUNYA. My counselor LOR probably mentioned something about me being truly interested in learning, a teacher allowing me to independently read math textbooks instead of attending class to permit going at a much faster pace than the honors class, possibly taking more college classes than any other student he had seen from the HS and his support in these activities (for example, he had to work towards getting approval for half-day schedule at HS, followed by half-day schedule at college), etc. My LORs may have also mentioned remaining motivated while dealing with a difficult personal experience. My ECs and awards were nothing really special… some HS math league / quiz bowl type organizations, doing well in regional math contests, etc. I may have mentioned being published in magazines as the first person to complete a few popular video games. However, the personal note in my acceptance letter didn’t mention any of this. Instead it praised one of my essays, which related to not being afraid to take risks.

Stanford gives some information about what they are looking for at <a href=“Holistic Admission : Stanford University”>Page Not Found : Stanford University; and other links from that page. Some quotes are below:

Wow, your story is very impressive, congrats for the acceptance :). And thanks so much for providing me with the link! I’ll definitely try to improve to meet Stanford’s expectations.

You are highly qualified, but anyone who tells you that you have a great, or even a good chance at Stanford is lying to you. It’s not an indictment against you. That’s just how selective Stanford is. 4/5 students with a perfect SAT score get rejected.

@AnnieBeats Yeah, but 1/5 people with perfect SAT scores got in. That is 20%. A huge number for acceptance based upon any type of criteria. I would love to have that 20% chance. Although, I really do not think college admission will look at a student differently whether they have a 3.9 UW GPA, or 4.0, or if they have a 2250 SAT, or 2400. They have obviously showed they have the academic ability to successfully complete courses at the institution.

@FightThePower That is only because there is a smaller pool. The odds are not in anyone’s favor to get into Stanford unless they are a developmental case or Chelsea Clinton.

Current Stanford student here! Class of 2018~

I don’t like chancing because (as I’m sure you know) it’s always a crap-shoot at the end.
Your stats look great and I can only hope everything else works out for you, but it’s mostly up to luck after you hit that submit button.

Have you seen these videos yet? They were of insane help to me when I was working on my application:
<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube;

Let me know if you need the other links (I’m pretty sure the videos are unlisted, but I haven’t searched extensively to check) or if you need help with your application/essays (the Stanford supplement is insane isn’t it? haha). :)

Thanks for the replies!
@d33d33 omg thank you! Those vids cleared hinges up a whole lot! I think that I’m kinda like Case 2. Hopefully my recs turn out well.

You’re almost the female version of me with better grades lol. See my chance thread.
I think you have a good solid chance, definitely worth applying. Wouldn’t be surprised if you got in at all and your EC’s aren’t really that bad.

@theanaconda‌ I saw your thread! Thanks for the chance, you have a solid chance as well! Good luck :)

You have a very great chance in getting into Stanford. My neighbor got in with a full scholarship and he did almost exactly the same things you did. Do not worry at all! I have a few questions: How do you get a 12 on the SAT Essay? how must you write, formulaically…? Also it would be a huge favor to me if you could send me your essay through via message that would be awesome and you would make my day! @DreamOn

Sorry, I just saw this. Thanks for the chance though!
