Recommendations
Counselor/Med program director-Very good-talked about my being a devout vegetarian and a determined student, etc
I waived my right to read the other ones, but I assume at least one of them is good

Monroe? quite possibly. This money doesn’t go toward your cost of attending school though.

Murray? doubtful (but there are only 4, so that is doubtful for everybody)

justink, you certainly have some fantastic academic and personal merits and I’m sure we will enjoy reviewing your application.

All students who apply are considered for the few merit based scholarships we have. As soccerguy mentioned, we have very few scholarships and even fewer than include tuition money because the Monroe Scholarship provides a research grant but not tuition assistance. Only 45-50 students a year come in with tuition scholarships (Murray Scholars and W&M Scholars).

Your application and all others are being reviewed for those two scholarships and the Monroe award. Unfortunately, no applicant should bank on a scholarship award from W&M because we simply do not have many to award. We focus our efforts on meeting need-based aid more so than granting scholarships.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but my point is related. I just received an email requesting an essay as I was selected as a potential Murray scholar finalist, does this mean I was accepted at W&M?

I think it means you are in.
But don’t sue me if I’m wrong.

tjkid - it means you were one of the strongest applicants in the pool… so… you should be good to go.

tjkid2011 - Congratulations, you’re definitely in.

W&M Admission – You said the following in a 02-03-2011 post found at:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-william-mary/1081218-decisions.html</a>

“Murray finalists are notified that they are finalists usually in late February or early March. They receive their admission decision at the same time as Monroe Scholars (since all Murray finalists are Monroe Scholars).”

Feb 9 is not generally considered to not be “late February or early March”. Has there been a change in the schedule for notifying all Murray finalists/Monroe scholars? Are exceptions being made on a case-by-case basis?

tjkid2011, while there is no formal offer of admission to any regular decision applicant at this time (and there won’t be until early March when scholarship recipients receive notification), we wouldn’t consider anyone for Murray who we thought unqualified to be admitted to W&M. Trust your instincts. They’re good ones.

W&M Admission – I have tried to just sit back and relax as much as possible, but this post has me wondering. Have all the applicants being considered for scholarships been notified? Thanks!

:( There was no way I could attend W&M without some serious money, I knew I probably wouldn’t get a Murray but it would have been great to have been considered a semifinalist. :frowning: :frowning: :(

Because we review new applications every day it is possible that we could still consider additional students for Murray although we will likely be finished notifying those we wish to consider in the next week or so. Remember, there are only about 70 students from whom we request a Murray essay (that’s 70 students out of nearly 13,000 applicants) and then there are only 20 who come to campus as semifinalists.

Honeybee, Murray is only one of our scholarships. The other two (Monroe and W&M Scholars) are notified at time of admission. They get no advance notice. Most scholarship notifications will be made the second week of March.

W&M admissions, could you by any chance describe the three different types of merit scholarships? Which type of scholarship is given out the most? Murray, Monroe, or W&M Scholar awards? I’ve been wondering about this for a while, especially since I come from a middle class family and a merit scholarship would be really amazing :)

Thanks so much haha.

Jayster,

The Murray Scholarship is the highest merit award we give out. Only 4 incoming students a year receive this scholarship and it’s for the absolute best applicants in our pool in terms of both academic qualities and intangible/personal qualities. Murray Scholars will be at the top of their class, will have amazingly strong curricula, are usually above a 1500, and have some amazing talents/experiences. For in-state students, the Murray award is a full-ride. For out-of-state students, they get whatever the cost of IS tuition, fees, room and board comes to. For example, this year, IS tuition + fees + room and board is $21,000 so OOS Murrays get $21,000. Murrays also get preferential registration, summer research stipends, invitations to dine with campus dignitaries, etc.

The Monroe Scholarship is our honors program. About 8% of the incoming class will be Monroe Scholars. The money here is for summer research, not tuition (you get a $3000. summer research stipend…you can also apply for a $1000 stipend for the summer between your freshman and sophomore years). Monroes can also live together in Monroe Hall their freshman year and get preferential registration for their first semester at W&M. At the end of the freshman year, certain students who weren’t designated as Monroes through the Admission Process will be invited to apply to join the program as sophomores.

The W&M Scholar Award is not a program like Monroe and Murray. It is only merit money. All students are given the equivalent of in-state tuition all four years (~$12,100 a year). It is awarded to students who lend diversity to our campus or who have overcome significant adversity.

All applicants are considered for all three scholarships by virtue of applying.

Thanks W & M Admission. I appreciate your speedy and comprehensive replies.

Any time Honeybee

Thanks, W&M Admission! Another very helpful post :)

Any time Jayster
