Do you think i will be accepted?

Hey everyone,

Sorry, i posted this thread in the wrong forum, and after i found this forum i juss put the same thread in here, hope thats alrite.

I'm new to CC, as u may notice. I just recently came about this website and realized how helpful it actually is. I was wondering if anyone can give me input on whether or not i would be accepted into UCLA (University of California: Los Angeles). I am currently a junior in high school and also I'm interested in the engineering field. Here are my numbers:

SAT 1 (juss got results today and it is my first time, its not good, but hopefully better in january)

CR:530
M:680
W:660
MC:63
Essay:10

Total: 1870 :<

I bombed SAT 2 bio, got a 590, but i will take math 2c and chem later this year

i currently have a 3.75 unweighted, and most probably a 4.17 weighted, for junior year (may be greater, later)

I am not involved in any clubs as of now but maybe later

im going to play golf in the spring season

i have a lot of extra curricular activities outside of school

i am working on 300+ volunteer hours (we get a plaque for exceeding 300 hours)

i think thats about it for now. i would like to get into UCLA as an engineer major, but i heard that one can easily get in as any random major and switch majors after attending college.

i hope anyone can help me with this, the whole reason im so worried about this a year earlier than my apps time is because of my poor SAT 1 scores , and also im indian so all u brown ppl out there knoe of the "wonderful" treatment indian children receive when we do "badly" in academics. but its not like my parents made me ask this question; its my curiosity, and hopes

if there are any UCLA attendees or alumni that can answer my question, it would be helpful

thanks

haha im not a UCLA attendee or alumni but i do know Engineering is one of the most popular majors at UCLA. and i also know average weighted GPA is 4.2 w/ a 2030 so ur below in both categories. U should try to hit 2100 then ur chances are good!

Yeah for UCLA College of Letters and Science I would say you have a shot, but HSSEAS is way too picky in their GPAs and SAT scores. If you're thinking about engineering, definitely retake the SAT because it certainly seems to be a stretch.

just pull up your SAT1 and do really good on math2c and chem and you'll have a shot.

You definitely want to start getting involved in ECs much sooner than later...

Also, it is true that once you're admitted you can change your major however, it is much more challenging to switch colleges (i.e. L&S to HSSEAS)

definitely retake the SATs and try your best to hit the 2000s...if you're planning on engineering, your SAT IIs in math/sciences will also be very important. Try to get them as high as possible. As for GPA, you have a solid one right now so keep on maintaining, if not raising, it.

Are you instate or oos?

i am in state, california citizen, but i know that i have to retake my sats and hopefully ill do well on my sat 2's cuz i know it really matters

i heard that if u do a internship in ure major, it increases ure chance by a lot. anyone knoe any good internships in the engineering field (computer sciences, software field) in the bay area cuz i wudnt mind doing something i like as an internship.

i hope ill hit a 2000+ in january for my sat 1 i hella messed up in math and cr for december, i usually get 700+ in math.

if anyone can tell me about any good internships in the computer field, and/or if anyone can give me advice if they went through the same dilemma i am going through rite now

oh yea i forgot a major part:

i've been in band ever since 5th grade, and I'm planning to stay in band for the rest of my high school career (wudnt mind playing in college (UCLA) for scholarships)

involved in a community organization for the past three years (possible essay topic)

i have been working as a paid tutor for Kumon Math and Reading Center for 3 years now

took foreign language in spanish for three years, and pretty fluent in two indian languages

also have college units or credit from taking a class, and band gives me college credit too
prolly will have around 10 units excluding AP tests college credit

and at the end of my high school career, i will have 6 math courses in 4 years (all honors and AP), 4 years of science (life, bio, chem, and physics(maybe AP), 4 years of english(2 years honors), 3 years spanish, 2 years PE, geography and health, 3 years of history(one year being AP, and other is Economic/Government class), and 4 years of Band(Including Marching Band)

the school i attend is ranked API 935.0 one of the top public high schools in California: Mission San Jose High

ohhh i've heard of mission san jose...you would totally feel comfortable here then since your school is like 70% asian :p

No. If that were the case, all prospective engineers would be advised to apply as East Scandanavia Studies, and then immediately switch to Electrical Engineering upon admission. :)

Your race should be of low significance in admissions.

Bump up your SAT to at least 2100-2150 to have a serious chance at UCLA Engineering. Your GPA is slightly below average; work hard to raise it a bit.

As for now, you're a reach.

so with a 2100+ i have a better chance?

that can be my motivation for next time cuz im going to study real hard, but the only problem is my critical reading. im so bad in that section, i know i can improve math cuz i usually get mid 700's and writing shudnt be that hard to raise (my essay was horrible, and i still got a 10)

anyone have any advice on how i can improve my CR score?

thanks everyone for ure help

go to a tutoring program that has SAT. for CR its basically reading alot of passages, getting used to the set up, and memorizing vocabulary.

^yes, it's all about understanding and understanding the passages quickly. are you in ap english? i'm sure your teacher has practice passages or something...read as much as you can to practice drawing meaning quickly and also expand your vocabulary at the same time....that's what helped me the most.

Vocabulary and practice. People stumble upon passages because they do not know the meaning of words in context. Practice improves stamina. :)

hopefully i am going to do well on jan 27th

im am trying to practice only reading

well keep in mind you do have to hit 2150ish preferably 2200 and your math score should be 750 or higher if your trying to go for engineering. You also must take math 2c and score 750 or higher and i strongly recommend taking physics and scoring well on taht to prove to admissions 'hey, i nkow my *****'.
