My name is Anthony, and I'm a senior in high school in Long Island. NYU is one of my top schools right now, if not my top school, but I'm afraid that it may be too much of a reach for me. My GPA is a 3.7/3.8 and my class rank is 57/507 so I fall right in about 11%. My problem is my SAT scores: 1730 overall, 1070 two part and a 660 in writing. Its really weak, especially compared to my GPA, and i've taken it 3 times so I doubt it will go up much more. I have a solid essay, 3 excellent letters of recommendation, and many extra curricular activities including president of the french club, New York State registered EMT with 6 college credits, member of yearbook, announcements for morning and afternoon, I teach religious ed in my parish, I am in the chorus, have taken piano lessons for 7 consecutive years and completed NYSSMA up to level four. I also sent a supplementary resume, and also a separate essay to express how important to me this school is, on a personal level too being that I have struggled with acceptance throughout my life and bullying on some levels, so a place that I could feel comfortable and call my second home is ideal.

Give me your honest opinion guys, I know that NYU is very selective but on the other hand I heard they also follow a holistic admissions process, so any advice you can offer would be much appreciated, thanks again!

although your extra curricular activities are excellent as well as your GPA, the SAT score is a little short. Overall though, i feel your application is quite strong, it seems very candid which is something the admission reps like to see. Due to SAT score, i cannot say for sure yes you will get in because of the fact SAT/GPA are the two important things colleges look at. However do i think you have a chance, yes. Best of luck to you. I am applying as well :P

I know, I’m so annoyed because I know my SAT is holding me back but best of luck to you also! I’m sure everything will work out for what its meant to be :)

I think a good deal of it will depend upon which school you are applying to. They do indeed seem to genuinely undertake a holistic review, but it 's also considered relative to your intended school within NYU. Assuming you are not applying to an audition-based program in Tisch or Steinhardt, I think you may want to seriously consider applying to the LSP. If you are applying to the CAS I think they give you an option to accept an offer for LSP if not accepted to CAS. I’m going to assume you are not interested in Stern. If Gallatin, then you’d need to make a clear argument for what you want to study and why you are goal-directed and independent enough to make that program work for you. In other words, really tailor those essays to show why NYU is a great fit. I think they realize some people just don’t test all that well and it’s not representative of their ability. If your curriculum was strong, your GPA should carry more weight. All you can do is give it your best shot. They turn away a lot of 2200s and accept those with much less. It is an unpredictable process but you have to give it a shot if you want it

okay thank you for your honest opinion! I planned on entering CAS, I haven’t given much thought to LSP but I will look more into it, thanks again! got alot of information from you!

@lightingmom, so if I do have my score in 2200s but my gpa isn’t quite there (its not great), would I have less of a chance than strong GPAs but lower scores? (or would it depend on essays and whatnot)

You should have tried ur hand at the ACT. Given ur profile, you could try to show that u just arent a good test taker. That could have alleviated the SAT score to some degree I suppose

I took the ACT once and only got a 24, so I gave up on that. Standardized tests aren’t my thing, they never have been haha, I just hope they can partly look past them because they most definitely are not a fair representation of what I have to offer
