You don’t think I have considered? Just because my idea seems crazy doesn’t mean I am unappreciative of my parents. Why do you think I am trying to go to a cheap college? We could afford more but I don’t want to put a strain on them. @thumper1
Your posts are confusing in terms of costs. Especially since you started out talking about going to BU and NYU. Those are obviously not cheaper options.
Thanks for the recommendation, LuvsLabs, I am looking at Rutgers atm.
I am saying I could and my parents are willing to pay, they say if I like it enough, they would be happy to pay, but I am keeping the cost in mind and the cost seriously affects how much I want to go.

Rutgers instate is $34,000 or so. Rutgers OOS is $50,000 or so.
They do NOT give OOS students instate rates @LuvLABS
Please explain how spending $100,000 to attend Boston University for 1 1/2 years to then transfer to a CUNY or wherever where you will get your degree…is “keeping the cost in mind” at all.
If you are keeping the cost in mind…you will go to CUNY or SUNY from the get go.
Just to step back…what about UBuffalo and UMass? Did you look further into those schools or visit?
And if the money is doable, I would reconsider Temple – it is a fine school and Phila is a very nice and fairly affordable city to go to college with easy access to NYC for visits (For full disclosure I’m a NYer who really enjoyed her college years in Phila. and got a job in NYC after graduation).
I graduated high school 6 years ago and I’m currently a non-traditional student. Take my advice with a grain of salt as someone who’s probably not that much older than you, but old enough. The best academic and financial decision I made was going back to school to a CUNY and not one of the outer state schools (I had dreams of going to UCLA for the new city feel as well). You can make many bad decisions in college, but one thing you really want is minimizing debt (or completely eliminating it). Go for the cheapest option. Your future self will thank you for this.
To answer the titular question: Very bad idea. Go to CUNY for all 4 years if you can. If your parents allow you to, take a gap year(s) and figure out what you really want out of your college career and beyond. I did this and it worked well for me. College is honestly what you make of it, and for undergrad no university on earth justifies a BU or NYU price tag. Quite a few people from my community college in recent years have received acceptances to places like NYU, Princeton and Stanford so obviously doors weren’t shut for them. How will you take advantage of the resources around you and make best of the situation you have? I wish I applied this question more early on when I began college. Regardless, do as you wish in the end.
Look. I could go to any school I want that I get into, that’s what my parents told me. We could afford it. I am keeping the cost in mind but that doesn’t mean I won’t consider the cost. I would PREFER to go somewhere cheaper as in I would consider an expensive option if I like it but if I don’t I would go to the cheaper one.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Since cost is not a factor, I don’t think there’s anything to add. Closing thread.
