I live about 7 minutes away from my college and I was thinking about dorming next semester just because I am sick of driving to campus all the time I feel like I practically live there and I want to feel more involved in the school. But I don't really like to party and I am kinda shy and I spend alot of time studying. Do you think it would be a good idea for me to get a dorm? Or should I just transfer schools?

I commuted last year. It was about a 30-45 minute commute by public transit, not too bad frankly. I decided to move in off-campus this year because I wanted a better social life, and I wanted to just get out of my dad’s house and do a bit of growing up on my own. I don’t regret the decision at all.

You can be the more bookish, non-partying type and still enjoy living in a dorm. Just don’t do it if it’s really gonna set you back financially.

If it’s not a financial burden, I would recommend living on campus. It’s really convenient and helps you meet people. There shouldn’t be too much partying in your dorm, and if there is, it should be easy to avoid.

This is a different questions entirely… if you’re unhappy at your school, transferring is always an option. I personally wouldn’t want to live that close to home even if I did like the college near my house. But if you’re okay with living close to home and enjoy the college you go to, I see no reason why you should transfer.

Ok thanks for the advice. Its not that I am unhappy with the school it’s a great college and I’m in a really good engineering program. I am just ready to move out but I am afraid of being a loner and having no friends because everyone has made them already. But if I transfer far away I could just start fresh.

Why would it be any different if you transfer? You wouldn’t be a freshman if you transferred, you’d be a sophomore or junior in the same boat as you’re in now. At least if you stay at your current school you’ll know the lay of the land a bit more. Trust me, I had a bit of the same worries when I moved out, but as long as you’re a sociable person you’ll be fine. Most people like making new friends if they’re fun and nice.

Ok thanks so much for your advice I think I am going to apply for housing and see what happend

Don’t worry about everyone else already having friends. If you’re even a LITTLE bit personable you’ll have no problem falling in with a group of friends. Leave your dorm door open while you’re in your room and hang out with the guys in your hall when they ask you to and you’ll be good to go.

There are many of people in my dorm that don’t party. If you don’t want to party, then you don’t have to. And it is still easy to make friends if you’re personable and don’t stay shut in all the time.

There’s plenty of people who don’t care to party but still live in dorms. I don’t party but I’m in a dorm…yeah sometimes you have to put up with the noise people who do party make late at night, but you don’t have to get involved in it.

If you’re overwhelmingly introverted, then you may not love dorm-life. However, if you’re interesting in being social, it’s certainly a start!
