I am currently a rising junior who will be taking AP chem this 09-2010 year, and I want to get into a medical related field. Do you think it will be useful for me if I memorize ions, atomic number, and atmoic mass of at least 30 commonly used element's on the periodic table?

You’ll probably end up memorizing them through frequent use during the class anyway. So I say don’t bother.

I’m not sure about 30, but if your AP chem class is good you will end up memorizing the ions and atomic number of a good number of elements.

Yea by the end of the year you’ll know the properties and ionic charges of many, many elements. You’ll probably know the atomic mass of at least CHONPS and the alkaline (earth) metals. Spend time now memorizing polyatomics rather than single elements.

^Yea. It’ll be more useful to memorize the polyatomics.

You should at least know the abbreviations of all the elements and have a vague idea about their charges though.

In AP Chem, u suppose to usually know the properties of the most common elements. Ions are important to remember.

It’s always good to memorize them, but seriously by the time you finished AP Chem you really should’ve memorized the diatomic gases, the groups. I don’t think the metals shuold be concerned since youare going into the medical field.
