Do you think Stanford will once again not accept anyone off their waitlist?

Is it probable that Stanford will once again not accept anyone off their waitlist? They accepted 2400 people but I thought the class size is supposed to be 1600. So does that mean the 800 people have to reject Stanford in order for the waitlist to be in effect? That's quite a lot! There's probably not much of a chance. How many people do you think Stanford will accept off their waitlist this year?

It's impossible to say. Those numbers mean they're expecting their yield to be in the neighborhood of 67%, which is probably a prediction based on historical numbers and where those numbers are trending. The recent development seems to be for students to apply to a whole lot of schools as a hedge against not getting into a couple of them, which lowers both admit rates and yield rates. The admissions office is most likely trying to predict what effect that trend will have on the yield. Maybe they predicted it accurately (and very few people if anyone will get in off the waitlist), maybe they overestimated (and lots of waitlisters will get in), and maybe they underestimated (in which case no one will get in from the waitlist, and a bunch of us upperclassmen will be left without housing!). There's not really a good way to predict it.

Note they actually admitted less people than last year. So the number probably wouldn't be 0 this year, but still don't expect it to be >50.

I will do anything to get off of the waitlist. Groveling letter to the admissions board, HERE I COME!

But doesn't admitting fewer people mean that they are more likely to admit more from the waitlist?

Waitlisting basically means that you had the minimum qualifications to be accepted but that there were a lot of people still better than you. Its not a good feel. Approach it with realist expectation. (I know someone who rejected Princeton because they got waitlisted at Harvard and ended up going to Notre Dame. Not a smart move)

Its a very slim hope so think your decision through.

I suspect they might take some people off the waitlist this year, not a lot, but I think they would go to it.

I heard from an administrator that they had a higher-than-expected yield last year and their housing is overcrowded as a result, so it is possible that they might be wanting a smaller class to make up for the overenrollment from last year. I suspect that it won't be very many if any but for those on the waitlist I hope that I am wrong!

Do you think that if I send in a letter stating that I am willing to live in a tent (and maybe a hose for showers) on-campus it would help my chances?

idk. waitlist is basically impossible anyway...

LOL! Maybe--they do love that quirky sense of humor there! Frankly, that might be better than the housing that some kids ended up with earlier this year:

It would be a miracle if I got off the waitlist. I'm not religious, but maybe I should start praying everyday.

Anyone watch Frisky Dingo around here?

Stanford has a target 1650 class size. It may or may not accept any off the waitlist; notice they accepted fewer students this year, which may be an indication that they will be expecting to take some from the waitlist. However, if they have a higher yield (it has be steadily going up each year), they will not admit anyone from the waitlist.

All this, though, is pretty uncertain. This year is the most uncertain year yet as to yields; for all we know, Stanford's yield could drop a few percent. It could go up a few percent. We'll have to wait and see.

^Hopefully it drops many tens of percents. :( And I, too, would be willing to live in a tent to go to Stanford haha.
