i dont understand how the 1st amendment says we can have freedom of speech but then there are restrictions to what i can say in school and in life.

here's a decent explenation for the school part: http://www.lsc.state.oh.us/membersonly/freedomspeech.pdf

and yes we have freedom of speech.

omg thats like a fricking novel

lol

i guess we freedom of speech... at least more than some others.

I don't think too much freedom is a good thing.

yes...well mostly

and to some, not at all

There isn't really any restrictions to your freedom of speech in life, but there is in schools...I mean, life threats and things of that nature is not part of freedom of speech, although that should be pretty obvious.

Too much freedom not a good thing? Are you ****ing serious?

u§ername is probably from china :b

i agree with username (how do you make the cool s thingy?). too much freedom is a bad thing. if people were free to murder, participate in incest, etc., it would not be a good thing!

^Are you retarded as well? Freedom to murder, incest, etc...Are you familiar with the concept or abstraction of freedom or rights? Freedom and coercion are incompatible.

We don't actually have any of those rights listed in the constitution. The government, if it chooses, can qualify those rights down to a point where we don't really have them, and in fact, much of American history has been a struggle for people to "their" rights. Quite simply, we enjoy a degree of freedom of speech because it is expedient for the current politicians to allow us to have them. In our current climate, it wouldn't do a politician any good to openly take away all of our rights, because they would lose public support. However, if the politician can, say, create a climate of fear where it appears to be to all of our benefit to have reduced rights, they'll do it. If it is expedient for politicians to qualify certain rights down to nothing, they'll do that. Most of the time, politicians use terms such as "freedom" and "rights" as propaganda to gain support, just like the term "patriot" is used- "if you don't wear a lapel pin of the american flag, you hate this country and you're a terrorist!."

We have more freedom than a lot of countries do. Then again, that's not really saying much.
