Do you think your current/potential college degree will be worthless?

I'm talking about ALL degrees. This isn't about one degree being better than the other. I just finished watching a documentary about the college degree (in general) being worthless because the job market is so saturated.

What are your thoughts? I'll post my response later.

I’ll post my response later too.

Probably, depending on where I go, it’ll be history and classics or history and poli sci.

Do I think the actual having a degree will be useless? My undergrad, yeah. My JD and/or MA not as useless.

However, the skills that I learned while obtaining my degree will be far more useful than my actual degree.

Bachelors degree maybe…hopefully a masters and phd will get me somewhere

A B.S. in Real Estate from NYU? Not sure what I can do with that. :/

^^^…ur going to NYU and majoring in Real Estate? If u know that going to get you know where, then why major in it?

Really bad grammer in my last post =P

Okay so I’m posting my thoughts:

I think the Bachelors is the new HS Diploma. People are producing Bachelors left and right, so having a Bachelors degree doesn’t make you unique nor does it make you stand out. There was once a time where having a Bachelors (along with nice credentials) made you stand out, but now with the economy, high unemployment rate, and competitive job market, those times are buried.

I think what’s next is that you’re going to have to have the Masters degree to make you stand out. Think about it…two candidates with the same credentials, but one has the Bachelors and one has the Masters; it’s apparent that the employer will choose the one with the Masters. This analogy reminds me of the HS Diploma vs College Degree hypothetical scenario (i.e. two candidates with the same credentials but one has diploma and one has degree…employer chooses the candidate with the degree). But then the issue with getting the Masters is that one will be racking up significant additional debt. On top of the possibly 200k in debt from undergrad, one would possibly have to take 100k out in loans making one potentially ~300k in debt. And unless you’re going to go on to make a 7 figure salary, that is clearly not worth it.

.

^^that sounds about right, Stratusfaction
I have to just say that I hope not…it’s going to make these four years seem a little useless if they’re not going to get me anywhere. Don’t get me wrong, I WANT to go to grad school, but I want to have the option to get a decent job without it.

I personally think my BS in Computer Science will be enough to land me a job, especially because it is such a rapidly expanding field. I am still going to pursue a MS if all goes well.

haha these expert opinions and documentaries about college degrees being worthless are complete bull ****.

Yes more and more people will start having college degrees, but that just means it is now more important than ever to go to college.

Seriously if anyone tells you that college is a waste of time then they are a ****ing moron

Hopefully it won’t be, my “plan” hinges on my degree being worth something.

Dunno–S just got a great job with the federal government with his “worthless” BS in EE. We & he are pretty happy! He may at some point decide to go for grad school & employer has offered to help pay. Even back decades ago, many of us needed to get graduate degrees to get the jobs we wanted & 8 of the 9 of us in my family DID get graduate/pro degrees to work in the jobs of our choice. Much depends on the fields & individuals involved.

I love this topic just because I like hearing the different views on the subject.

Also, Congrats to your son HIMom.

HImom, anyone who says an EE degree is worthless is an idiot. Glad he got a job!

Thanks–he actually received THREE job offers and would have received another IF they could find funding so they could hire him. There ARE jobs out there and MANY employers DO expect folks to AT LEAST have a bachelor’s degree. Whether you need a graduate or pro degree depends on field & jobs of interest to a large extent. There are some employers who will let folks work while earning their graduate degree. Some grad degrees are funded (student teaches and/or does research while pursuing grad studies/research).

Probably. My major is East Asian Studies. But at least I’ll be majoring in a subject I love instead of something I totally hate.

Hmm. I’m a Poli Sci major. No, it’s not useless.

May require some more work though.

Unless I want to become a high school Physics teacher, I think it won’t serve me any good to stop at a B.A. in Physics
