Do you use summer storage?

I am leaning towards having my son store as much as possible in Providence over the summer. When we dropped him off, I noticed belongings being brought back to Brown by various storage companies. I believe the Brown student agency offers this service as well as U-Stor-It. What have current students done? Do you know of other companies that do this service?

Do you typically have to rent for 4 months since you start around May 20th or so and return around August 26th?

I see a great deal on a 5 x 10 space which is too large for one person if anyone wants to share. They may not pick up (too early on Sunday to call and check) but they do offer a free storage truck to bring your stuff. And we would have a car in the fall to pick up. Anyone interested in sharing such a space?

I may be interested. For me, it’s all about the convenience - I don’t have a car and won’t have parents around to help me pack up in May or unpack in August. I’ll probably end up going for a slightly more expensive space if it’s more convenient for me to access my stuff.

In my experience most people I know use the storage company BSA engages with (Storage Center I think). They may or may not be the best deal around, but many other storage companies do send out e-mails/flyers this time of the year, so you may want to compare among them.

The thing with Storage Center is that they give out a certain number of storage vouchers, which students enter a lottery to get. They will also send your stuff back to Brown in fall.

Thanks, aleph0. I’m not quite sure what you mean about the vouchers. Do you need that to get a storage spot or do they give some students a discount with the voucher?

Oh the vouchers give a not-insubstantial discount. Last year it was good for 60 bucks.

Wow, I remember back when everyone used SpaceStation because that’s who Brown chose. I was the only person (to my knowledge) that paid less money ($80 for the summer) for SC to come pick up my stuff from my room and deliver it all right to my door. They broke something and some stuff was lost (not sure if I lost it or they did) but otherwise it was a better option. Make sure they inventory what you have and/or take pictures of the lot of boxes and what’s in them.

Aleph0, how do you enter the lottey for the vouchers?

Res Life will send out an e-mail with a link for you to sign up.

Thanks for the info!
