Do you want to be rich when you grow up?

That article was excellent. Think I might get a collection of his non-fiction works if I don’t do Infinite Jest.

About the Gourmet article, I just skimmed it but I think I agree. Anytime I have the fancy expensive lobster in nice restaurants, I’m disappointed. When I was in Maine I went to one of those restaurants on the first day and got lobster because it was my first chance to do so. Every day afterwards, I had lobster at a little shack where we could get a lobster for everyone there (10 people: my sister and I, my 2 “step” cousins, my aunt and uncle, my grandparents, and my “adopted” cousins) for a reasonable price.

I don’t know about rich. I think I’d like to be a bit more well-off than my parents. Like Maybe twice what they have. Basically, I want to be able to afford Hermes. Maybe 20 scarves (I already have 1, 19 to go!) and a few birkins and kellys and the like. I’d be fine having a family income around $500,000. But I guess it’ll actually have to be higher than that on account of inflation. If I end up having an income of $200,000, I’ll probably still be happy. I’ll just have to have only scarves and no birkins.

LOL, the sacrifices some people make.

^ Actually, $200,000 would be reasonable because think about it. By the time everyone here graduates college and gets a job, inflation will probably have kicked in big time. $200,000 in the future is basically $100,000 in current times.

I would love to be wealthy. :)

Even if inflation is that rapid, $100k now doesn’t exactly leave you on the street.

We were talking-about the love that’s gone so cold and the people,
Who gain the world and lose their soul-
They don’t know-they can’t see-are you one of them?
When you’ve seen beyond yourself-then you may find, peace of mind,
Is waiting there-
And the time will come when you see
we’re all one, and life flows on within you and without you.

Happiness is not being wealthy. Just check the statstics…the happy nations, like Denmark and Switzerland are happy because they have social connections, relax, and take time off. They cherish family and friends over money. Money just leds to gred. Have some, but don’t hog it. There’s much more in life than flimsy pieces of paper and silver coins.

i think money is associated with conformity and greed because of the time it takes to earn it, and the sacrifices that people make to maintain their status…, it’s possible to be a wealthy-happy person as long as they maintain balance in their lives.

I want to roll in wads and wads of cash all day long.

They also have extremely high GDP per capita…

^ Bahahaha.

My dad wanted me to be rich and a doctor since I was 5.

I’d like to be rich, yes, because living is more comfortable when you have more money. But even if I were, I’d try to live like an average person because I don’t want a lavish lifestyle.

No, I’d rather be happy working at a special effects studio or as a gaffer and make ~50 k a year than be unhappy in an office job where I’d have to be normal.

Although I’m quite good at sales, so if I ever get strapped for cash in a major way I’d go into software sales for a bit and make bank and then go back to my movies. But that’s a worst-case scenario, because I don’t want to sell out like my parents did and then regret not pursuing their journalism/theater tech dreams. I mean, they like sales and management, but they miss their passions. Which makes me sad.

not rich- i want to be loaded- the amount of money where you run out of **** to buy- that’s when you reach true nirvana

I’d rather be poor and happy than rich and miserable.

Rich and happy don’t mix very well.

Yes. Absolutely.

I think being rich would make me happier.

I’d like to have enough money to buy a house, nice car, support a family, and give my kids the chances I’ve been given.
I’m hoping to be a surgeon, so who knows; Carnegie Mellon might just set me up for a profitable future.

I’d like to be incredibly, filthy rich.

This thread is a fantasy thread, so why not wish big? :D
