I plan on bringing a laptop and maybe a game system. I kind of feel uncomfortable just leaving expensive stuff out. Right now it feels like a roommate would be like living with a stranger. You'll never know who they let in. >.>

For a laptop, you might consider investing in a laptop lock as an anti-theft device. As for a gaming console, I would suggest perhaps either not bringing one or to bring one of the older game consoles (such as a PS2 or Gamecube) or something like that; just something that you really won't mind getting stolen.

just make sure to lock your door, always.

As long as your roommate's not inconsiderate or a thief, it really shouldn't be problem. My stuff getting stolen isn't even remotely a concern for me. I've brought my laptop, gamecube, many games and DVDs, controllers, and speakers. I haven't had any issues or the need to worry so far.

Like betterday said, lock the door when nobody's in the room.

those things are left out all over the place... be smart, and you'll be fine.

I've never been worried about people stealing my stuff, because it seems like most people in my dorm are rich and can just buy the stuff they need. I've heard about one person having a laptop stolen but I keep mine semi- out of sight and the door locked usually. The only thing I've had stolen is food out of the big communal refridgerator. Nothing big, just a few lean cuisines, but it pis.ses me off when I want to eat something and it's not there when I go to get it. It's like, wt.f buy your own bitc.hes! They're freaking $2.

yea, i hear college students complain about foods stolen all the time

actually last time i went to my brother's dorm i stole someone's cheesecake too.....lol i was hungry though, and it was good.

dont bring the newest laptop on the market bring something old that no one wants.

I don't worry about it...we lock our door when nobody's here and that is probably the biggest thing in eliminating theft. I trust my roommates and their friends and they trust mine. But none (there's 3 of us) hardly ever bring friends over...we usually go to their place because there's more room. I leave my laptop on my desk during the day when I'm at class, no problem. Thought about a lock but haven't found a need for it. The most common place students lose laptops, books, phones, cameras, etc., is the library and student union because they'll get up to "go grab the paper quick" or "run to the bathroom"--just enough time for somebody to come by and take their stuff. But that's just being stupid...And I'm in a fairly rural area (Ames, IA) so I don't worry about theft too much. If I was at NYU or something urban I'd be more cautious.

i think if you're careful, lock doors, never leave important things out of your sight at a public place, you'll be fine.

personally I disagree... assuming you're going to use the same computer for all of college, you probably want to get a pretty good one to start with, so it can still function in 4 years.

I'm definitely with soccerguy on the laptop thing.

Honestly as long as you're not careless about it, it's not going to get stolen. If you absolutely need to, put a lock on it.

Nope (10 char).

if ya buy a cheap old webcam and set it up so it looks normal then have ur pc only start recording when it see's motion, then ya cought the person.

someone in my building a few semesters ago did this and they caught the RA going into people rooms.

"someone in my building a few semesters ago did this and they caught the RA going into people rooms."

ROFL, what happened to the RA

He got taken out of the RA program and was not allowed to live on campus anymore.

Thats good. Thanks for the idea about the webcam, if stuff starts to get stolen i'd definately use one.
