Hi! I hope this isn't a bad place to post this question...

I am interested doing a Piano Performance/Math dual degree in college, and, of course, I'm looking at some exciting schools that offer this opportunity, including Johns Hopkins/Peabody. From what I understand, JHU gives its students a huge workload, which I presume would make an already grueling dual degree track even more difficult.

I guess I'm just wondering if there are any College Confidential users with have experience in the JHU/Peabody dual degree who could discuss the doability and usual workload this level of study entails. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I didn’t do it but I know of someone who did a dual degree in math and piano. She’s currently a physics grad student at Stanford (so yes, it’s doable provided you’re capable of doing it).

I have 2 friends doing a Peabody-Hopkins dual degree. One is singing and Math (either that or Mech E) and the other is trumpet and EE. I won’t lie- you will have a LOT of work and some weekends you won’t be able to go out for long. However, both of them are very happy and still have time to hang with friends and relax. It’s all about time management.

I myself was not a dual-degree student but I knew a couple dual-degree kids. All of them (seriously all) had good things to say about the program(s). Peabody is an AMAZING place and you’ll have a great experience should you go there.

I think the main “con” would be traveling between campuses. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the different Hopkins campuses, but there are three main campuses (campi? whatever), and they are all in different areas of the city. There is a shuttle service that goes between campuses regularly, but in my experience there were some delays and problems with it (i.e. if the shuttle was full, you couldn’t get on and had to wait up to half an hour for the next one). As a student who worked and took classes at both the Homewood and Medical/East Baltimore campuses, I would just say, plan your classes/sections carefully and leave plenty of time for traveling (I’d say maybe half an hour?). The Peabody campus is closer to Homewood than the EB campus is, so I think it’d be less of a hassle. They also added more shuttles, I think. But still something to consider. And TALK to your professors ahead of time (i.e. first day of class or something). I was usually able to leave class early or skip a class or two because of transportation/work issues and did not suffer for it.

I would say the “huge workload” depends on degrees and classes. You may actually end up with more “work” from your piano degree than your math degree! Time management and scheduling do become very important. It’s definitely doable though, don’t psych yourself out!
