Okay so I was talking to some people that told me that Dobie wasn't worth the money. But I was looking at the rates, and it's cheaper to get a corner suite with unlimited meals than a dorm on campus with a private bathroom. So, I mean what's the catch? Is it worth it? Because I feel like there must be something wrong if a private dorm cost less than a normal dorm...?

I haven’t checked those out myself but they are dorms so you’ll share a room with another person. If you want opinions on Dobie check our ApartmentRatings.com.

I’ll ask around and see what people think about Dobie and I’ll go ahead and post it to your thread.

is it really disgusting? I mean some people say its clean and quiet and others, quite the opposite. I can’t imagine it being more gross than Jester. Heard that place stinks like **** lol?

Well, the mattresses were nasty, the halls were dingy and creepy and the lobby area/rest of the building struck me as quite dated and depressing. I remember there were no lamps or lights in the rooms, so I sent my hubby out for a couple of cheap lamps so the kids would be able to see when they came in at night. The lightbulbs were out in the bathrooms, too…not a sign of good management. I dunno, maybe I just have high-(ish) standards, but it seemed less like a college dorm and more like a public housing project to me.

thanks for the feedback. The only reason I would consider it is that it will save me money on food. If I don’t live in Dobie, I’ll be at Jester, because there is no way in hell I will shower in a community bathroom no matter what anyone tells me. Anyone have any opinions on Jester vs. Dobie?

San-Jac and Duren have private bathrooms, but they’re more expensive than Jester, though MUCH nicer. The corner suites in Dobie do seem pretty darn nice. I mean, you get a living room, right? I can’t believe that actually costs less than Jester. I never compared the prices, I guess. Nowadays, I can’t afford either one.

Dobie’s common areas just got renovated over Christmas break. It’s a lot nicer now.

It’s definitely cleaner and nicer than Towers. Duren feels like the inside of a large, quiet luxury hotel. San Jac feels like a hospital. Dobie is more friendly and feels more like a party dorm, but not in a gross, dirty way like Towers is.

The catch is that the place is an absolute dump. I was coming from out of state my freshmen year, and the dorms were full so I ended up living in dobie.

Food was terrible, sometimes there were flies hovering around the deli and occasionally there were bugs in the lettuce at the salad bar.

Elevators were SLOW and sometimes out of service.

The building overall was in very poor condition; maintenance requests were never completed in a timely manner. There was mold in my bathroom and it took them over a month to get someone to take care of it.

And the staff there is pretty much useless.

Although the maid service was pretty convenient and the location was great.

I would recommend living at Jester or any other on campus dorm; you’ll get decent food and a good place to stay. SanJac and Duren are the nicest if you can get one of those.

San Jac does kind of have kind of a hospital feel. Lol. But it’s like a nice, luxury hospital. Not too shabby. I would definitely say the food is the biggest difference. UT’s food service is awesome. Best college food I’ve ever had. I don’t see how Dobie could top it. And I’ve heard people who lived there said they hated it.

I wouldn’t call Dobie an absolute dump, and I’d say Dobie’s food is better than Kinsolving. I did not think very highly of the all-you-can-eat food service. I did, however, really like Littlefield Patio Cafe–the pizza is the best I’ve had in Austin!

seriously Dobie isn’t worse than Towers or Jester. It’s not as clean as Castilian but its NOT a dump. It’s DATED - so you’ll see sprinkler piping in the rooms and the closets don’t have doors but it doesn’t smell like urine like Towers does every weekend.

As far as getting a living room area - its no big deal. I mean we’re living in a dorm to meet people, not to hang out by ourselves in a living room – if i wanted that i’d go to one of the nice apartments in the area. So, it might be nice to have but not really a point to base the decision on imo.

Go to The Block or Jefferson 26. Student living facilities are way nicer. Dobie is a good location but the rooms are small and it’s actually not really nice inside at all. The building looks good though!
