Can anybody try to sway me towards a suite (3 roommates) or a studio (1 roommate)? I'm so torn between the two! I've heard good things about both...

WOW! 31 views and no answers… :(

Didn’t get help on this site with dorms either. Its more of a personal question. I asked a bunch of my friends before I decided to go with the studio. You just have to weigh things out. 3 roommates vs 1. I just couldn’t risk getting 3 bad roommates. It is possible to get 3 good roommates by going in it blind folded, but in reality, theres probably 1 “good” roommate out of 100+. So the chances of you getting 3 good roommates is like hitting the lottery. (By good roommate, I mean being honest, understandable, respectful, friendly, good hygiene, etc.)

Another thing that got me sold on having only 1 roommate is the living room in the suite. It would end up being a headache. You have 4 people trying to share it and your roommates will probably bring people over to chill/party in that living room. 4 roommates also equal having that kid who brings drugs into the dorm or gets drunk and becomes loud as hell. You have to remember, if anything happens to that living room and nobody confesses; you are equally responsible. So if something gets stained, broken, illegal drugs, etc., its on you.

I’m going with a studio for now, but if I meet 3 other people who are “good” roommate types, I’ll probably go with a suite next year. Good luck.

“(By good roommate, I mean being honest, understandable, respectful, friendly, good hygiene, etc.)”

You know… most people are like that. I would say the odds of getting a good roommate are like 80%, with 10% being okay, 9% being “meh” and only 1% would you get “that guy” who is just the worst roommate ever.

Lol theres no way your chances of having a good roommate are going to be better than a bad one. May be from your specific experience, you might have been dealt some good cards but from the 15+ people I asked, including my own judgement, have all said the contrary. Respectful? Honest? These are valuable characteristics that majority of the people, in general, just do not have.

Of all the people I met in my dorm, I would have been roommates with all but one of them. That’s at least 30 or 40 people that I would have been cool with. Some would have been just okay, but most are really cool people. Especially my neighbors, the three rooms near me were great and I would have roomed with any 6 of them.

I see, what dorm are you talking about?

I was in Prather, on campus.

Prather is known for being friendly and attract a lot of people who are serious about studying. Thats why its one of the quieter dorms. I would of gone with it, but I didn’t fill out the application since I was accepted near the end of April. Also, I didn’t like the idea of being in a majority male dorm. I think they had a flood last fall too.

It’s majority male? Really? I didn’t notice. I was on the first floor (not the basement floor) and the 2nd floor was all girls. I figured it was all equal.

It’s more serious about studying? Hah, I never noticed that either. Me and my neighbors would always be hanging out, going to dinner, playing games, etc. We had a few parties, I had a few parties, etc. It was great actually. I didn’t even spend an hour a day studying, to be honest.

I picked it originally because it had the largest rooms for the standard priced dorms. It’s slightly larger than roberts/brack, as long as you don’t get a corner room. They are hard to organize furniture and you end up having to bunk beds.

The flood wasn’t a big deal, 3 rooms on the first floor got flooded, and the 4th that should have, they just put towels on the floor in front of the door and no water got in at all. Not a big deal if you were in your room when it happened. Most people saved their printers, etc by picking them up. The school paid for replacing all of it and offered free washing of all clothes/towels used to stop water.
