DOC program at Marshall??

Hello, I got accepted to Marshall college and was wondering about their Dimensions of Culture program?

I just wanted to know if any current, new, or graduated students from Marshall/UCSD can inform me about the program? I've heard a few complaints and am just curious as to what to expect from it. Isn't it only for Freshmen...?

Thanks in advance!

lol can someone answer this?..i cud use the info. as well

also, is DOC mandatory? or just recommended?

any info. at all on it is appreciated

I’m not from Marshall, but since nobody has answered yet…

Yes, it’s probably mandatory. I’m guessing it’s similar to Sixth’s CAT program, Revelle’s HUM program, etc. Just a guess, but it’s probably a humanities/writing/cultural series which will take up two or three quarters.

But I’m just guessing… any Marshall people have an official answer?

I am also not Marshall but most of my friends are. It’s 3 quarters long. I’m SURE it’s not that bad, people tend to exaggerate complaints.

Here’s the website if you wanna look. [Thurgood Marshall College: UC San Diego’s Third College](http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/index.php) Of course, there are no student opinions on there but you could always look up the faculty on ratemyprofessor.com.

I’m a second year at Marshall and yes, DOC is required. You are required to go to every lecture and discussion (3 1 hr lectures and 2 discussions a week… 1 discussion only first quarter). DOC is a 3 quarter-long course and the 2nd and 3rd quarter are worth 6 units because the amount of reading and writing you have to do is extensive. The course focused primarily on how the white man is very evil (the course talks about the struggles of minorities and their difficulty assimilating to the white culture). The second quarter was my favorite because you learn about important supreme court cases (and u can look up the cases online as reference instead of reading the doc reader)

The DOC readers are quite pricey… you’re required to have the new one each quarter. Because the readings are everchanging you can’t buy used versions of the reader. The DOC readers I had to buy ranged from 90-100 dollars. I’m guessing its probably more than that now because the new DOC readers are even thicker than the ones we had (they’re as big as the chem 6 series book).

DOC is a lot of work because there is a lot of reading u have to do for the class (around 300-400 pages per quarter). A majority of Marshallites take this class during their freshman year so when you’re in the class your suitemates will suffer through it with you.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the help
the thread helped me a bit

btw, if any current marshall students are readin this, plz feel free to post about the DOC program…my post is the second one of the thread

Actually going to lectures is not required as I have never gone to them and have done well in both DOC 1 and DOC 2(even if the professor says there will be test questions based on lecture). Discussions are required for participation grade and so far DOC 1 and DOC 2 have been very easy to me! Don’t sweat about it.

I don’t know if they changed since last year but DOC 1 2 and 3 we had assigned seating in lectures so the TA could pass out a clipboard for attendance. Points were deducted if we missed a couple lectures/discussions.

Okay, thanks to everyone who responded! Your info is much appreciated! However, I would like to know more about the discussions/lectures…? Could you elaborate more on what it’s like? Is it really intense or just pretty laid back? Like is it mandatory that everyone has input for a decent grade? Sorry for all the questions, I’m just so used to my high school classes where the discussions are not really “discussions.” I don’t know if they prepared me enough for these big time college ones yet so I’m not sure what to expect.

So transfer students still have to take DOC? even with IGETC completion?

I’m not trying to be rude but Google really is your best friend…

[General Education Requirements: Marshall College](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/undergraduate-college-system/unique/core-curricula/marshall.html)

I guess I do have to take two of the DOC courses then, that sucks.

i wanted to get a more subjective opinion on the course. you know, people that have been through it or know a lot more about it. thus, google was not my best friend this time and i had to make this thread. >:(

^^ oh no, my comment was not directed towards you! this thread is just fine.

hahaha yeah i realized this after i read your post more closely.

no worrrrries : )

wow after some searching, i found the actual agenda of the DOC courses. Like the worksheets, assignment, schedules, everything…

[Thurgood Marshall College: UC San Diego’s Third College](http://marshall.ucsd.edu/current/doc/handouts/doc1Handouts.php)

for 2008.

I personally despise the Program. Maybe it’s just the TA’s I received but I didn’t like DOC 2. DOC 1(Diversity) was ok but DOC 2 (justice) was just probably one of the most useless classes I have, will ever take. I guess it is just preference. The material isn’t difficult at all but if you can’t match your TA’s wants then just try to get through it. The fact that DOC 2 and DOC 3 are 6 units doesn’t help either haha.

does anyone know if doc textbooks can be re-used from previous years? or a way to get doc books for cheaper? do we have to buy the new ones each quarter?..they’re pretty expensive.

just borrow from one a suitemate that bought one lol
