I’m a second year at Marshall and yes, DOC is required. You are required to go to every lecture and discussion (3 1 hr lectures and 2 discussions a week… 1 discussion only first quarter). DOC is a 3 quarter-long course and the 2nd and 3rd quarter are worth 6 units because the amount of reading and writing you have to do is extensive. The course focused primarily on how the white man is very evil (the course talks about the struggles of minorities and their difficulty assimilating to the white culture). The second quarter was my favorite because you learn about important supreme court cases (and u can look up the cases online as reference instead of reading the doc reader)

The DOC readers are quite pricey… you’re required to have the new one each quarter. Because the readings are everchanging you can’t buy used versions of the reader. The DOC readers I had to buy ranged from 90-100 dollars. I’m guessing its probably more than that now because the new DOC readers are even thicker than the ones we had (they’re as big as the chem 6 series book).

DOC is a lot of work because there is a lot of reading u have to do for the class (around 300-400 pages per quarter). A majority of Marshallites take this class during their freshman year so when you’re in the class your suitemates will suffer through it with you.

Hope this helps.
