DOC Trip - Hiking Gear?

For some of you that may have hiked before and came from distance to Dartmouth for the Doc Trip (flying into Boston)?

-Did you have to check on backpack when flying; or did they let that be your carry on (size)?
-What size backpack do you all use for the moderate hike? Do you carry your own food and sleeping bags on the hike?
-Looking at Northface store at backpacks; any other suggestions welcomed.
-Don't have hiking shoes, plan to wear well broken into sneakers. (Don't have enough time to break in new shoes.)

The sneakers should be fine according to the information we received.

Are you doing hiking?? What size backpack did you get? I found a 40 that should do. I plan to hike more when I get there one day.

Moderate is a pretty easy backpacking trip, but you will be carrying your own food and sleeping bags (and tarps and clothes).

If you get a proper backpack, it will be too big to carry on most airlines.

Northface sells overpriced, generally low-quality packs (at least, The North Face brand itself is weak … they might sell other packs). Other brands to look at are EMS, Osprey, Kelty, Gregory, among others.

You’ll be fine with sneakers. Trips is about the people you meet, not the hiking/canoeing/kayaking/whatever that you do.

S flies back and forth with his backpack using a zip-up golf club bag cover to check his pack. The pack fits nicely inside with a little room left for his boots or other bulky items that don’t pack in a suitcase well. It saves wear and tear on his pack and the club cover folds up and stores easily at school.

I’m on the same trip… hiking 2. I got a Kelty with 2650 cubic inches. Is that a large enough bag?

Probably. You usually want 3K+ cubic inches for a multi-day trip.

moderate isn’t as easy as you think it is! i’ve hiked a lot in boy scouts and thought moderate hiking would be a cinch but moderate is more like harder hiking - 20 miles in 3 days.

Daughter is a DOC leader this year (Moderate), and she says if possible you should buy/bring the sorts of shoes and other stuff that are recommended by the DOC. She said the equipment lists are based on many years of experience as to what is really needed.

You can also borrow the special equipment (backpack, bag, pad) from the DOC. Just blitz them so they know.

Thanks. My daughter is coming from a distance and planes limit the amount of bags (or charge quite a bit).
