Docking station/"boom box" for Unifieds

I know I saw someone post something in an older thread about what was used for Unifieds, but I can't locate it now soooo.....

Does anyone have any suggestions for something reasonably priced to use for Unifieds that will be loud enough?

Thanks!

Not sure if we can post links to products . . . trying here, not sure if it will stick.

This is what my daughter used for 2012 auditions. Takes batteries, plugs in, great sound, easy to transport. (She had a little bag with iPods and player in it that she carried around.)

There are newer versions . . . just be aware of the pin-configuration (where you plug the cord into the iPod to charge) . . . especially for iPhone 5 as it has the dinky plug-in slot I’ve been told.

We are going to use an iPod which connects via bluetooth to a portable JBL speaker. Great sound!

Two votes for JBL! Thanks. Headed to Amazon now!

When we were going through this process last year someone posted that they had used a Bose mobile speaker that was around $200. So we went and checked it out and found that the quality of sound was really great and lots of volume for any size audition room (some were larger rooms with carpet so we wanted to make sure the sound was heard well but not overpowering of course). We also looked at cheaper ones but the sound wasn’t great, and we didn’t want poor sound to be a negative factor in the audition. Yeah we were a little OCD about the sound for that reason but have been very happy with the Bose. It can be plugged in or there is a re-chargeable battery in it, and it can play either through an 1/8 inch stereo connection through Bluetooth. It is very portable and my D carried it all around Unifieds in Chicago with no problem. We have used it many times since (plugged it into my laptop to improve the sound there, etc.). Best of luck to everyone going through this crazy process this year!!!

I bought the JBL one also.

Just went to Amazon. “Only one left in stock!” was the message. I bought it. I’m sure there will be more “in stock” in minutes.

I have a Bose SoundLink and I’ve been very disappointed. I’m a HUGE Bose fan, I have book shelf speakers, computer speakers, a Bose PA, and the Soundlink. The Bose companion speakers I have blow the Soundlink out of the water in terms of tonal quality and for $200 less. I can’t recommend buying the Bose thinking that it will be great for other things as well. I think you’re better off looking at the JBL or something cheaper. Bluetooth and rechargeable are really good ideas for Unifieds.

Haaaaaaaaa, entertainersmom!!! I ordered a JBL. A salesperson at Best Buy said JBL is the only way to go. It’ll arrive Monday. I sure hope it works well!

We and a number of others we know got the Jambox by Jawbone.com You can get it from their website. Very small, easy to travel with and great sound. Reasonably priced as well.

I’m just updating. I bought the JBL On Stage Micro II. It’s an older version of the IIIP. I think it works great! I believe it will be loud enough to not be overpowered by the daughter’s belt. I sang loudly (and badly–scatted really since I don’t know ANY of her songs) to her tracks from across the room and was still able to hear the music. The only thing I don’t like is that it must have batteries even to function on AC power. Other than that, I think it’s great. We shall see…

I bought the JBL too and my D thought it was HUGE (apparently she wasn’t alive for the large boom boxes of my youth and we thought those were cool!) and insists she will cut a CD instead - how she plans to play that on anything smaller than the JBL is beyond me. I’m sure she will happily use what I bought her when she doesn’t get around to anything better. I love teenagers!

KIDS! What will be smaller than the JBL and plays a CD!!! Let me know how that works out for her! LOL

So what happens with the taped music? Does the auditionee walk in the room, set down the box and hit play? My D was playing with hers yesterday and realized that her music starts right away. So there is no time for walking to the center of the room or even turning forward for that matter. Then someone suggested there should be dead time (about 5-10 sec before the song starts) Also, it comes with a remote, but then what do you do with the remote if you have no pockets? Or do the Auditors hit the music for you? most likely not?
Does anyone have experience with this yet? Thanks!

The D had to cue her own music. The room was set up with a small table in the middle of it, but I have no clue how the set-up will be for Unifieds auditions with no accompanist.

Thank you! Did your did have a lag time on her recoding before the music started? If so how much time?

There wasn’t a lag, but I remember thinking that a lag might be a good thing. The lack of one didn’t seem to be a problem.

Dreamatinydream, I’m so glad you mentioned the time lag. My son has been making audition tracks for people (changing keys, and so forth), and I wonder if he’s thought about asking people if they want that.

I just checked out the JBL, and it says it’s not compatible with iphone 5. Does anyone know some other options that work with the iphone 5?

There is a JBL that is compatible with the iPhone 5. You should also be able to use a plain ole auxiliary cord that goes where the earphones normally go and use that with the doc. Key words are “should be able to”. I used it with my android phone not an iSumthin.
