I guess you can say that I'm going through a mini quarter-life crisis right now. I just switched majors from Biology to Health Sciences and I'm liking it a lot more. But I'm second guess on what I want to do. It's always been my dream to be a doctor, but I'm starting to feel a burn out and I want to get done with school fairly soon-ish and start having a career and a life. I'm a senior but I will graduate in December 2014 (transferring from CC to a uni put me behind). Last October I had another mini crisis and started seriously considering PA school, since it's 2.5 years and you're done. But since a lot of schools want a year of health care experience, that would put me even further behind. Now I'm looking into OT and I'm liking what I've been seeing. They make a decent living and I would like helping people. I also like how it would be a lot let stressful than medical/PA school (and I wouldn't have to take Organic 2!)and how after I get my degree I can start working right away. But I'm also worried that I may be selling my dreams short, I've always said I wanted to be a doctor but is it ok to possibly switch to something else?

Not everyone is meant to be a physician. The career requires a great deal of time and preparation before one can even begin to practice medicine.

It’s perfectly understandable and acceptable if you decide you don’t want to dedicate the next 8 years of your life to med school +residency.

OT is a worthy profession.

One thing you ought to do before you make any irrevocable decisions is to do some shadowing. You should spend some time seeing what the jobs of both OTs and physicians are actually like. You need to have first hand observations before you can make an informed decision.

Both med school and OT programs will expect that you have done job shadowing and volunteering in either a clinical medical setting (for med school) or in OT setting (for OT grad programs).
