Documentary

I believe last year or two years ago..... Discovery-Times did a wonderful documentary about the 3 military academies... I remember watching it on TV... but I have not been able to find a copy of it On-line anywhere.... Any one have any information about this documentary and where I can find it????

Tbby2 -

Are you talking about the National Geographic "Surviving West Point" series?

That can be purchased here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008V2X2/ref=pd_sxp_f/102-3366923-1019307?v=glance&s=dvd

(For any of you candidates that haven't watched this...run, don't walk, to see it).

KateLewis,

I agree with you that this is marvelous for appointees, prospectives, and parents to see. And if you report on 6/27 and haven't seen it, please do so. Also, I think this link will provide a better price than amazon's:

Just plug in the words Surviving West Point in the search box.

Enjoy!

hmmm I'm not quite sure what the title of the documentary was... but I know it covered all 3 of the major military academies and their doolies/plebes.... not just west point... and it aired on the Discovery Times channel

is that the one?????

No - Surviving West Point aired on the Discovery Channel, I think, but is specific to that academy.

tbby,

Please make sure to let us know the name of this documentary when you find out. Thanks.

The documentary was an independent film... I guess Discovery Times had nothing to do with making it... they just aired it

These documentaries cover the 4 major service academeis and is a 3 part series... Made in 1999 and follows the class of 2002 at each respective academy

1)Conquering the summer - covers BCT traing
2) Surviving the first year - Plebe/doolie year
3) Making an officer - covers being in the academy

The episode I saw was Conquering the summer... I remember it was amazing... BCT was very well covered. They showed the cadets memorizing knowledge... showed the cadets in the red sashes yelling at the plebes... just a great indept look at BCT... most of which we can only read or see in pictures...

for more info/link refer to the Air Force Academy Link...

o wow momoftwins - your link even beats ebay.. im impressed - thanks

The 1999 video is titled: Inside America's Military Academies. You can find it by googling the title. The video's description says that the 48 minute video profiles all 4 academies' training from induction to graduation.

The more recent video: Surviving West Point was produced by the National Geographic Channel and aired over 12-14 hour segments. It's great but only covers West Point. It follows a group of cadets during their first year at West Point. Check you local library, it might have it. Otherwise it costs about $30.

Finally, there are a couple of excellent( 30- 40 pages long) feature articles on West Point and Annapolis in the July/August 1999 Issue of American Enterprise magazine. The issue was entitled: Deep Inside America's Military Academies. Although 5 years old, it seemed pretty current. Find it at:

http://www.taemag.com/issues/issueID.132/toc.asp

uh... Would love to see this video done on three of the academies and will check it out but I wanted to bring up a pretty big point. There are indeed not 3, not 4, but 5 US service academies. Not trying to be a know-it-all busy body or anything...... Just hated to see the other guys get shorted on here.

well when we refer to the 3 Military academies... we mean the 3 MILITARY, Department of defense military academies...

yes there are 5 SERVICE academies service the Department of Homeland sercurity and the Department of Transportation .... but they are not part of the department of defense, although they are in service to our country

All five service academies are included in the series.

aspen, thanks for the TAE link. Hadn't seen those articles before.

tbby2, "we" thank you HA! HA!

Just to let you guys know.....and people applying now, that the Merchant Marine Academy commissions into all Armed Forces, its kind of America's best kept secret.

Well Done Flynavy and very true. I could also add that USMMA is heavily involved with homeland security through the dept of transportation. Some quick research finds that these kids were involved in the supply chains during the Gulf War, ect. The ladies and gentlemen who attend this academy will work hands-on, not in a classroom setting, with homeland security during their second year at sea. I don't think tbby was actually downing on the other academies. Its just hard to interpret messages sometimes without hearing the voice or emotions along with it. So thanks for the info on the video. I'll try to get my hands on a copy. Its all good! "We" must go now and eat pizza. Tbby, I'm just funnin'...

hey, one team one fight haha

I've been trying to track down "Inside America's Military Academies" to see if I could find a better price for anyone interested. Unfortunately I have found that it has been discontinued. Sometimes these kinds of items are reissued at a later date.

So the options seem to be: order at the high price, wait for it to be on tv again (and let all of us know that it's scheduled), ask your libraries to order, or wait for it to be reissued.

If anyone else gets more info please post it. Thanks.

You could trying begging the Discovery Channel to re-broadcast it. They did last year I think.

momoftwins,

Did you try http://www.aimsmultimedia.com/? I know that they had the DVD's available fairly recently.
