I know that I will need a waiver for my eyesight (its horrible, -550 each eye), but since I have an LOA I am hoping I will get the waiver. My question is about the remedial (sp?). Will I have to get another exam done at the same doctor? My problem is that I will be back in Cambodia by the time I get my remedial for my eyesight, and I'll be 8,000 miles from the Colorado eye-doctor who originally did my exam...Does anyone know what the procedure is like for bad eyesight?

Good advice is available on several threads in this forum (search for vision waiver).

In a post from last spring, Zaphod gave a link to a different forum that has lots of DoDMERB info: http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20

Remedials can be done by the DoDMERB contract doctor or a doctor of your choosing. I'm in the same boat as you. I just had my remedial eye exam today and did fine. Hopefully I will be cleared by DoDMERB in a month or so.

BTW, don't get freaked out if you get a DQ letter from DoDMERB b/c of your eye sight. For USNA the waiver process will begin automatically.

If it's any consolation, my mid (who had perfect vision for DoDMERB), but after a couple of years at USNA wears glasses/contacts for distance, says that nearly 50 percent of the Brigade wears glasses.

That's good news :) At least they don't have to wear BC glasses all four years, right? that's only for plebe summer...right?

The bigger issue is not who bad the eyes are but if they are correctable to 20/20.

Yep about half of the Brigade wears corrective lenses. And many do the PKR during Second Class year.

BC glasses are only for Plebe summer but also a good idea for Herndon and Sea Trials!

My eyes are correctable to 20/20, no problem....
