Does 3.4 first semester Freshman Year Hurt my Chances of Admission?

Hello,
Semester grades are coming up and I haven’t really impressed myself when it comes to grades. I go to a very competitive high school (top 500) in California so academics is very rigorous here. I usually get around 3 hours of hw plus studying to do. I hadn’t adjusted well to high school which keeps my grade down. I feel like i haven’t worked hard enough. Plus i got some family issues so sometimes they make me procrastinate.

These are currently my grades
Biology Honors 87%
This class has a ton of memorization and many of you think bio honors is a joke but it is actually fairly difficult in our school. The teachers read off the slides and give something random that isn’t related to the lesson for homework. Also, part of it is my lack of studying for the tests. The tests need at least 4 days of memorizing to get an A. This was completely unexpected because i would always study the night b4.

French 1 87%. Damn this class is a pain for me. My teacher on the 3rd week of school gave every1 a pop quiz out of nowhere and it was very difficult and I was completely unprepared for it. I got a 28% (LOL THAT SCORE IS ACTUALLY BAD). I had a C for a month but i worked extremely hard to raise it to a B. For some reason he isn’t giving tests out anymore

English 1 Honors 88%. Gosh, this class is one of the most controversial ones I have ever taken. I had a really hard teacher and got lots of hw. I had no problem with that because I could realize she is preparing us for AP English. Her class made me realize I actually have to work hard for my grades. But then, something tragic happened. Over labor day weekend She passed away :frowning: :(( I was pretty depressed about her passing. We have a new substitute teacher and she is alright. She is fairly decent its just that she has only been teaching for 2 weeks and she is still adjusting to the class.

PE 99%. So easy lmao

Algebra 2. 89.2% Plz don’t think im biased towards the teacher, I completely am not. Our teacher gives his 100% in teaching and I appreciate that. However, I don’t appreciate his tendency to be nit-picky in tests and quizzes. If i don’t follow a step that he would normally do, thats points deducted. I had the second highest grade with a 90 percent. But, today, I have been really depressed because i got a 79 on my quiz and it brought my grade down to 89.2. I did everything right but idk what happened to me i added and subtracted polynomials wrong :((

Photography 96% this class is actually ok. Challenging at times and I struggle a lot. I had to work hard for my grade.

I think i can definitely improve next semester. I think i can get 3.8 GPA if i work hard enough. I am aiming for UCs (specifically UCI/UCLA) and couple of other schools like NYU, USC. I don’t really know cuz im just a Freshman. :)) Can i still get into a good college even though my grades have been poor?

Yes, you’ll be fine. You’re at a B+ which is enough for a lot of excellent colleges. If you are aiming for a T50 you’re going to have to up your game, but you are hardly flunking and you’re going to have many great options available…

well, if its your first semester of freshman year, you still have time to bump that GPA up. I understand that we all go through hard times, but how we handle them is what makes us strong and prepare for worst that might come in the future. So make some habits to study, also you will be using these habits again college.

Although you said “…i would always study the night b4” you will have to change this strategy, as it will affect your grades as you get much harder classes. Good luck!

You shouldn’t worry too much. You’re only a freshman. Just bring it up and you will be fine. Don’t stress too much.
