Does 8th Grade Algebra Count at CSU?s?

Question: Are 8th grade courses counted for the CSU’s? For example I had 1 year of Algebra I in Middle School. When I went to High School, I was in Geometry. Will my 8th grade math be counted for CSU credit. Thanks in advance. You need to check with your guidance counselor to confirm [...]

The thing you need to be careful about is making sure you have enough math in high school to complete the HS graduation requirements. My HS gets a lot of students who “max out” at Algebra II. This will meet the CSU requirement but they must take an honors pre-calculus class to meet their 3 year HS math requirement. We seem to run into problems every year with a couple of kids that can’t do it (pass H pre-calculus). It is very stressful as parents scramble to find a CC class or on-line class that will meer the requirement. I suggest you don’t skip HS algebra unless you are REALLY good at math or your HS graduation requirement is only 2 years of math.

I am going to add another point so that parents are aware of another limitation for CSU’s. My son took biology in 8th grade. All the accelerated students take Bio in 8th so that they have an extra year to do other sciences in HS.

CSU requires one life science and one physical science. (UC’s don’t care) CSU will not honor my son having taken his biology early so he must take another life science as a senior if he plans to apply. He wants to take Physics C so is going to also take anat and physiology because he can’t repeat biology since he already took it and doesn’t want to take AP bio.

Make sure that taking any class early doesn’t interfere with meeting future requirements.

What about taking Spanish 1 in 8th grade, will a CSU or UC campus accept this? My daughter’s middle school was actually on the same campus as her high school (a public school). She basically took HS Spanish 1, while in 8th grade with high school students. She then took Spanish 2 in 9th grade while in high school, and then transferred out of that school and enrolled in a HS program that did not offer any language courses. Will this class count for CSU/UC purposes?

If a student has received high school credit for middle-school foreign language, the CSU and UC institutions will count it.

Please help me out with the abbreviations? CSU? UC?
