the college I am aplying to does not offer credit for the exam on which I scored 3. I got a 3 on AP World History, but Cornell does not offer credit for that exam. Does this mean that they will not even look at my score? At least I have a five in APES (which they accept) to kind of negate the 3 in WHAP...

Admissions-wise, it doesn’t work like that. So you got a 3. So you won’t earn credit.

Your score allows Cornell to see context for your grade in the class. It may not bode well if you’re an aspiring history/social sciences major, but this isn’t a death knell by any stretch of the imagination.

Historically, a 3 in World History at my school is fairly good. The vast majority of students receive 2s and 1s because our teacher is pretty much as bad as it gets (we covered less than half of the book in class). I know of only two people that received fives from my school last year. Also, one student that received a 3 on WHAP is going to Cornell this fall so I guess it is not too detrimental. Also, I am not sure if you misinterpreted what I said, but they do not offer credit for 4s or 5s either. Cornell doesn’t offer credit for WHAP at all, regardless of your score.

They will see your score, but I really don’t think a 3 in APWH will affect your admission to Cornell.

There is your mistake. Never depend on a teacher to go through all AP material for any course. Always go through the books yourself. I had the same problem with my biology teacher this year, so I decided to read through the relevant parts of my textbook (as well as use a review book) as study for the exam. According to the university which has my AP scores (which is also Cornell), I earned a 5. I’m thrilled to say the least.

I went through as much as I could of the PR AP World history book, knowing I couldn’t depend on the teacher to cover everything. I can honestly say that I would have presumably received a 2 if I hadn’t done the reading that I did. Two of the FRQs were specifically covered in the material I read in the week prior to the exam. Oh well, I’m just glad I got a 5 on the exam for which I can receive credit.

I second that^
