AP can’t be compared to IB. Firstly, IB is a program not a bunch of classes.

This is bizarre logic. Straight-A students aren’t often rejected for kids with lower averages, but for kids with similar GPAs that also offer something else–geographic diversity, racial diversity, an interest in a unique major. This isn’t to say that only 4.0’s are accepted, but that B-average students have little chance at the tippy-top school.

OP, I think the question that needs to be asked is, How good is your school? How many does it typically send to top schools? Where do kids with your GPA usually end up? Your best bet is to compare yourself to others in your school unless you have remarkably unique ECs or qualifications.

B average IB students are admitted to top colleges? Source please?

I was a college counselor for over 20 years, some of them at schools with top IB programs, and never saw a B student get into a top college.

glassesarechic: I never stated that straight A students are rejected over B students. What I mentioned was that even A students are rejected as are B students. While top Colleges are inclined to accepting A students over B students, there may still be hope left. Don’t get me wrong, grades are very important, however a B average applicant can still have a chance by other means. For example, having excellent SAT (I)(II) or ACT, EC’s, essays, recommandations, character (passion) etc…

I just wanted to give the OP some encouragement. You can still do your best and shine in other areas and see what happens. Note, it still does not guarantee acceptance.

Encouragement is great, but stating that B students, IB or otherwise, get into top colleges is probably not going to be helpful.

Redroses: They can and have done so. While top Colleges seek A students, it is “possible” that B students can be admitted. Perfection is not “always” what top Colleges seek.

They are not seeking Bs from any student other than a recruited athlete, wealthy legacy or URM with great promise.

Again, can you cite sources for the things you’re saying? They are myths.

redroses: I didn’t state that they seek B students. I said that it’s possible for a B student to be admitted. There other parts of the application to be considered. The student can work on other parts of their application. All hope isn’t lost.

Maybe it’s different in Australia?

It is POSSIBLE to get in with a B average otherwise Ivy’s accepted GPA would be a 4.0 but the chances of an unhooked B student getting in are extremely slim. It’s not IMPOSSIBLE, as in it never happens, but very close.

B Students do occasionally get in BUT they are almost always very hooked applicants.

OP, if you want to get in, you must first apply but love thy safeties and if you get rejected, don’t let it bite you!

Good luck!

I agree with HitMan. It is possible, however you should find some safety Colleges which you would be happy to attend. Just give it a try.
