Does a B sophomore year really matter?

Hello everyone, I know this question has probably been asked to death but I haven't been able to find exactly the answer I need.

I got a B in AP Biology this past year (sophomore year), both semesters. What's really annoying is that second semester I got an A both quarters and then bombed the final, which landed me with an 89% :/ Most frustrating thing of my life, being 1% away from an A. But anyway, I digress. My GPA for the year was 4.0 W, 3.83 UW, and my cumulative is 4.0/3.91

Specifically, Pomona has captured my heart; will this hurt me there? I know junior year is very important for grades, but how important is sophomore year? What if I talk about how science is not my best subject, in fact it might be my worst, but I took this class because I wanted to challenge myself and not just stick to AP's in English and history where I feel safe, and that I'm proud of myself for taking this class and being relatively successful even though I ended up with a B?

One more question: what about a B senior year? I'm planning on taking AP Calculus as a senior, and realistically speaking it's quite possible I'd get a B in that class too. Is that going to be bad?

Thank you!(:

Seeing as you’re posting this, I presume that AP Bio is your only B so far? I don’t think one B will hurt your chances, especially considering the fact that you’re not going to be a science major. Sophomore year grades are important but they’re not as important as junior year. I think the most important thing for you right now is to improve your grades junior yr…colleges like to see improvement so you definitely still have a chance to go up from here.

I’m honestly not too sure about getting a B senior year, especially if you’ve only gotten 1-2 in your high school career. The only reason I’m saying this is that unless if you’re ED, then colleges will see your first sem senior yr grades before making a decision. You don’t want to give them the impression that you’ve already started slacking even though you haven’t gotten accepted yet (even though that isn’t the case). Just to clarify, I’m only referring to first sem senior year- getting a B second sem is absolutely fine:)

Yes, that is my only B so far. I got A’s in all my freshman classes and that was my only B sophomore year. You’re right, I’m not going to be a STEM major at all; I want to major in something like history or poly sci or international relations. I’m going to work really hard junior year, especially in my honors precalc and honors chem classes and hopefully I can bump my GPA up a little!

Just don’t get anymore if you can help it. Junior and Senior years are much harder than sophomores.

“I want to major in something like history or poly sci or international relations.”
then you should also apply to Claremont McKenna [ which is right next to Pomona] .
They are known for their Poly Science/ Government majors and you would have the ability to cross register at Pomona/ or any of the other 3 colleges in the Claremont Consortium for classes that Claremont does not offer.

There are plenty of kids at all the top schools who got a couple of Bs and even (gasp) a C. No, this isn’t a show-stopper anywhere. That’s why kids with 4.0s and 2300+'s routinely don’t get into every top school: It’s not just a numbers game. And no, you don’t need to say anything about wanting to challenge yourself, etc…it sounds lame. You got Bs in bio. Big deal. Demonstrate some resilience and perspective by moving on and show-casing what you have to offer.
