Does a BA ever get to switch to a BFA program?

There are a number of schools that offer both BA and BFA MT track programs. (Same goes for BA Acting as well as BFA Acting). Several of these programs specifically state on their websites that one cannot transfer (after admission) from a BA program to the BFA. Switching from a BFA to a BA is fine.

In real practice and beyond the print of the brochure and the website … are switches from a BA to a BFA (either in Acting or MT) truly impossible or are they sometimes allowed depending on circumstances? Looking for anyone to comment that has real world experience with how things actually work.

Thank you.

I’ve known a few who have in my department. The thing is, that you have to re-audition for the program and you have to do it early on or else you’ll be staying in college for more than four years to catch up with the requirements.

i got to the University of Southern california, and BAs can audition for the BFA program but only as freshman, and they join the incoming BFA class the next fall. so in terms of their theater edu, they pretty much have to go back a year

Thank you both for replying to my OP. As far as I can tell, manyschools that have a BA and a BFA often track thier progrmas pretty much together (curriculum-wise) in the early years and the major fork in the road where the BA’s go one way and the BFAs go another happen in the upper grades. I’ve read that you MUST be into the BFA from the beginning in order to take advantage of those upper level, BFA only classses. Seems strange to me if the program also might take transfers so the essence of my question is: is there any difference from what is written and what actually could/does happen in BA to possible BFA land?

At Point Park (if I remember correctly) everyone is accepted into the BA track, then sophomore year, can audition for the BFA, or choose to remain BA.

At my school, Ball State, students in the BA Theatre Studies option, in a different option in the department, or not in the department at all are allowed to audition with the incoming freshmen for the BFA program. It is not likely for them to join at second semester, but five students in total were admitted to the BFA Acting and Musical Theatre programs starting second semester, so they will graduate with the current freshmen in the option. Generally, the admitted students begin the program as freshmen the following school year.
