Does a bad 9th grade matter?

I've been wondering for a while how much a sub-par freshman year of HS matters in admissions. When I was a freshman it hadn't hit me yet that what I was doing mattered now and I blew off school, and I got B's in math (on-level btw, blah I REALLY blew off that class lol), Honors Biology, and AP Human Geo. I'm on block schedule and freshman take 2 semesters of AP Human, and I got a B both times. I kicked it in gear now (sophomore) and I got high A's in my 3 academic classes (H Chem, Math 2, and H English) 1st semester, and, I kid you not, an 89 in a stupid elective class where the teacher admitted there was nothing to teach in the class. ANYWAY.
I plan on attending an upper-level state college like Michigan State or Georgia, do I have anything to worry about based on my crappy freshman year? This has been eating at me for a while.

As long as your grades have an upward trend, I don’t see anything bad about your 3 Bs

For those colleges, naw, you’re fine. Just don’t make B’s a habit.

Yeah for highly selective schools, getting too many B’s would be a problem. but for those, I imagine it’s quite as significant

Nah, you’re good. Make good grades from here on out and you’ll be fine.

Just don’t let that racism that you possess shine through in your essays.

:)

It really depends on where you want to go. I screwed up freshman year and it’s still hurting me.

You’ll be fine. A few B’s won’t hurt.

It hurt me pretty bad. I got a 3.1 in 9th grade and a 3.96 combined 10th and 11th. Colleges don’t really notice the up trend though. Just do a lot of community service now.

I know a kid who did worse than you in 9th and probably 10th too. He then got medicated for ADHD and started to get an A- average. He got into Brown ED this year.
