Does a bad recommendation hurt?

Now, when I say bad, I mean of poor quality, not one that reflects badly on the applicant. That is to say, the teacher tries to write about how great you are but is not the greatest writer (of recommendations or in general). If the recommendation is dull or bland, does it actually hurt or do they just not consider it/not count it against you?

It is impossible to say because there are so many variable but really you should try to get your letters from those you believe would be skilled at writing them. In general if the teacher is good at communicating via lecture you can be fairly certain that it will translate somewhat to a rec letter. Another suggestion would be to get letters from teachers whose classes you had to work hard in because they can attest to your work ethic or teachers in the subjects that appear to be weakest for you. Low math SAT? get your pre-calc teacher to write a letter which can counter the impression your SAT score gives.

It certainly wouldn’t hurt you. However, it could make the reader less intrigued and not really affect you at all.
