Sometimes colleges ask where your parents went to school, do they really care, or do they only care if they went or not? If they didn't go to the school you're applying to, does it matter if they went to a really good school or a random state school? My dad went to a really selective, small private school and my mom went to a random state school. Does that make any difference at all?

Knowing if and where your parents went to college can help complete the picture of who you are, but with the exception applying as a legacy (which can give some boost at some schools), I don’t think it makes much, if any, difference.

Knowing where your parents went to college is also something colleges look at in determining if they will yield you–if you’re likely to attend if accepted. If your parent went to a school they compete for students with and you are applying to that school, stats show you would be more likely to choose the legacy school.
