I'm not crazy about living in University Park. I wouldn't mind spending a year there, but that'd be enough for me. I really like the Abington campus due to its proximity to Philadelphia. If I pursue business there, is it the same as pursuing business at UP?
If not how much time do I have to spend at University Park to get a degree from them?
Thank you!

Penn State diplomas are awarded with the same requirements, standards, and paperwork regardless of your campus. It will say “Penn State” not your campus. The campus site will tell you which majors can be done entirely and which require the last two years at UP (called 2+2). Depends on the program…

If you like Abingdon, there’s no reason to come to UP if your major can be completed without it. Plenty – thousands – of Penn State grads attend at a regional campus. People who look down on places like Abingdon, Berend, etc. are misinformed. Good luck!

Hey you might want to read my threads and ask me for more information.

Here I wrote some very good information, check out all 3 pages to see my take on branch campuses!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/penn-state-university-park/1552736-transferring-from-2-2-branch-campus-explanation-p1.html

Also if you click on my profile and see my replies to threads, there you might find more information on this that you could find useful.

My summary:
I attended PSU Erie-Behrend before transferring to UP. I would say PSU carries a great weight and is a great institution. It has alot of campuses, but unfortunately not all of them are the same quality. The top choices for rankings for campuses would be
- University Park
- Penn State Erie-Behrend College
- Penn State Harrisburg

These campuses are the ones that are ranked and have very good solid programs and are perfect to to do 2+2 or finish your degree there.

Other PSU campuses from what I heard are low quality and are treated like community colleges, this is a fact.

Greenbutton, your diploma will say which PSU campus you attended…

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask me.

Cheers!

@obwian22 so its ok for you to say most PSU branch campuses are no more than community colleges and are low quality, but when I say essentially the same thing I’m “soo ignorant”.

@skyscraper12 if you look at the business degree programs Abington offers, its a BS in Business with a couple of “options” - But at UP you would get a degree in a solid facet of business such as marketing, management, accounting, etc. If youre worried about intern opportunities you’d probably be better served with the Smeal name behind you for Philly companies, as plenty of Smeal students have no problems getting internships in Philly.

@Etuck24, Im giving the most honest opinions/facts here to help this guy out to pick a PSU commonwealth campus that he will be comfortable at. Your comment earlier mentioned that the campuses arent good for other than transferring to UP. With that statement I was extremely upset with. Having attended PSU Erie, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. I have received rich education quality and support that had key elements that were not even there at UP for freshman and sophomores.
If you want to hear about these experiences I have received at PSU Erie that were not at UP, message me and I can explain them to you.

Yes everyone knows that each PSU campus doesnt have the same quality but Im just mentioning my opinion of top campuses that this fellow should look into if he wants something other than UP. IMO PSU Erie and Harrisburg at the top commonwealth campuses that will get you fantastic education quality and experience even if you are graduating there.

Not to get bogged down in minutiae, but I think that transcript may indicate which campus, while diploma will state “The Pennsylvania State University.”

taken from http://www.bk.psu.edu/Admissions/admitfaq.htm “If I graduate with a 4 year degree from Penn State Berks, will my diploma say Penn State University?”

Graduates of baccalaureate degree programs at Penn State Berks receive a Pennsylvania State University diploma-the same distinction received by graduates of Penn State University Park. The same renowned and respected diploma from The Pennsylvania State University ensures that graduates from Penn State Berks will receive the same consideration and respect in the job market.

Same info found for Harrisburg campus.

Skyscraper12 – Just a parent here, but was wondering if you checked out Abington’s career center? Maybe others can give a better review of University Park Career Center, but we’ve been extremely impressed with the resources available, alumni networking, etc. Also the Fall Career fair provides a tremendous opportunity to network and gather information. Just one variable, I know.

As an aside, son was able to take Math 230 at New Kensington one summer. He found Professor Gomez-Calderon a remarkable and exceptional professor!

@pilot2012, not true. Your diploma will say which PSU campus you will attend. It says, The Pennsylvania State University, Abington College. For example…

Cheers Mate!

Do not mean to further digress regarding diplomas, but you are correct, obwian22!

I know this is an old thread but no one gives a dang what your diploma says, no one ever sees it ( unless you hang around you neck. When you apply for jobs you say PSU University park, any contact from that employer goes through UP and no where else. Your transcript comes from UP and DOES not indicate where the courses were taken
Unless you spend all four years at a branch. Either way we’re not supposed to post on old threads.
Im glad people still post on old threads because all of the threads come up when searching and I wouldn’t find half of my answers without them !
