Does a high GPA but medium/low SAT score balance out?

So my GPA now is 4.8 and my cumilative GPA from 9-12 is 4.3 which I think is pretty good however I'm worried about my SAT score which is a 1790-- low by JHU standards people have told me. How much could this hurt me?

I'm hoping my extracirriculars could also help balance this out. I play in the marching, concert and jazz band. I'm also captain of our varsity lacrosse team. I went to Haiti to provide medical aid in the summer too, though I'm not sure if that's a major or minor factor. Also I'm in the IB program and have leadership positions in band and other clubs...

I'm also going to take the ACT soon. What score should I aim for that would meet JHU standards?
Oh and I'm also applying ED!

32+ definitely (on the low side, I think score ranges were 31/32-34 for the middle percentile), and unfortunately 1790 is very low on JHU standards :frowning: Class average was 2100-2300 last year. It’s true that you have some good ECs and a very good GPA, but I don’t know how a 1790 would place you in adcom’s eyes, though the wonderful thing about Hopkins is that they look at the whole package and don’t feel that a score is the only thing that indicates a good student, so I wish you the best of luck in admissions and the ACT.

Hope that helps :)

What’s the average GPA (unweighted and weighted) for early decision admittance into Hopkins?

Thanks Anouchi :)

I don’t believe they release the GPA specifically for ED, but overall (which is affected by ED) I would say 3.7-4.0 is in range for unweighted (based on admission websites, Princeton Review, and Collegeboard). 97% I believe were in the top ten percent of their class. Classes should be the most rigorous (i.e. all AP/IB/honors/Accelerated).

A note on ED: The stat’s are practically the same for ED applicants. Yes, sometimes lower stats get in, but the norm is that students applying ED don’t apply because they want an easier way in, but rather because Hopkins is their #1 choice. ED is not an easier way in. It just provides a less stressful senior year and a smaller body of competition (1200 ED vs 18000 RD). Hopkins’ acceptance rate ED is inflated because of a smaller applicant pool of very qualified students.

Hope that helps :)

Oh, btw refer to apply.jhu.edu for the most recent acceptance rates (RD + ED 20% with 18455 applicants, ED: 38 % with 1,115). College board and Princeton Review are not updated yet.

Okay, I just got the numbers from a Hopkins viewbook regarding GPAs.

14% 4.0
35% 3.8-3.99
26% 3.6-3.89
13% 3.4-3.59
9% 3.2-3.39
3% 3.0-3.19
1% <3.0

ACT: 31-34

SAT:same as I posted I believe

ED will put you in the best standing possible… I would retake and aim for 2000+. That said, you do a lot outside of class, you’re applying early and your grades are good. Give it a whirl and good luck!
