Does a job help?

I do a good share of ec’s and community service. I just got a job at a small company of only 4 employees. Would it help on me some if I told them I had a job?

Having a job always helps because it demonstrates your commitment to something.

Make it clear in the EC list what the job is about. Working at a fast food restaurant for money that you are going to spend on buying CD's doesn't look that good.

Would starting a job in junior year look good? It seems that it doesnt show long term commitment..

Alot of people don't have cars or aren't 16 until junior year (I'm young), so I think it would be normal not to be able to start a job until junior year. Work is less lenient than most of the ECs I had in high school, so it's going to show commitment and an ability to regularly show up to things. It can't hurt, I don't think.

I don't look at my job for a way to get money. But rather gain experience, because the job is really the similar to what I want to do later in life.

It's a small computer store of 4 employees, that sells and fixes computers. I like it because being that there isn't many workers, we all have a huge role in the company's decisions and performance. So I get to learn how a company works, and what it takes to have it do well.

Sounds like a great setup, since it isn't just some stupid/boring retail job.

Id have to disagree with some of you guys

Making money at some fast food join or retail job is actually very common for alot fo student who are in not so good financial situations. And that on top of school work for these kinds of students is a huge plus.

Im assuming your fine in terms of your financial situation. For people like these it is true that it would be better that you get a job that is harder and provides more experience. It is a plus in terms of admissions, BUT youll need to keep your grades high. If your grades fall while you have th job that is not a plus. It cancels out and sometimes even lowers you down because it shows you cant handle too much work. So get a job, but still focus on your grades. Grades are more important than the extra curricular. Sounds trite, but its true. The first thing colleges look at is your grades SAT etc etc and if you dont pass that first screen then your extra currilculars mean nothing unless they are incredibly like you work at some kind of insane research facility for cancer etc etc. But yeah have fun

Good Luck

Older generations tend to see teenagers having jobs as a way to learn responsibility and gain experience about what the world is really about. The ideal image is Beaver Cleaver getting a paper route. What has happened lately due to rampant commerialism is that a lot of kids get low paying jobs and then work excessive hours to buy clothes and luxury items. Adcoms know this!!!! Having a job is not viewed particularly well by adcoms unless it is clear that income from the job is necessary for the family or that the job is related to the interests of the student (such as a programming job for a future computer science major). Besides this fact, it is true what gl7 said.
