Does a job looks good on your college application or Volunteering?

HI, I am a sophomore now and would be skipping my junior year so making me a senior next year. I am a pretty good student. Mostly A's. Did really bad on PSATs...Got 167 ( 68 for Math, thts the only section I did good, and I hope to pull it up on SATs upto 740). I don't aspire to get into like really top colleges because I know my SAT scores won't let me as I am really bad at Writing and Reading sections of SATs. but want to try for some lesser than that like some state universities. So one thing that picks my mind is that what really looks good on college application? A part time job or Volunteering.?

Depends on WHY you do them.

Getting a job so you can pay off your Mercedes Benz… Not good.

Getting a job to support your family… Very good

Volunteering for the sake of resume padding… Not good.

Volunteering for the purpose of self growth and influential contribution… Very good.

Well yes that’s where I am confused as my family situation has not been good since lately and so I got myself a part time job. And so this leaves me virtually with no time to volunteer. Since Lacked volunteering, I was also not accepted into the National Honor Society and so this keeps me wondering every time that is volunteering really necessary?

I did both…I think most schools really liked my work experience(helped with family’s finances), but UFE at Bama REALLY liked my volunteerism(over 1000 hours) so it depends on the programs you want
