Does a Minor really do anything for a Mechanical Engineer?

Does a minor really do anything for an engineer? I am 4 class from a Math minor as well as 4 class from a Business Administration Minor. SOmeday I'd like to get my MBA. SHould I just skip the minor and focus on my current curriculum so I can get into a good MBA program or which minor would be better of the two?

Where do you go to school?

Penn State

It honestly won’t do much go you. A business minor MAY give you a slight advantage when you eventually want o move into management but not anything dramatic. In general, minors rarely help much.

ok thanks! I could pretty easily get one of them before I graduate. WOuld i be better off taking engineering courses or like you said go for the business minor? I guess it probably depends on what I want to do.

To the original question: no.

The second question: yes.

My S was going to do a physics or managerial something-or-other minor, but didn’t. Just stuck with Mech E. You will be fine. Keep the grades up :)

Thank you thank you. I will focus on ME and maybe see if I can fit one of them. Probably lean more towards the bus admin. might as well not owrry about something I don’t absolutely need. Has your son graduated and working? What are some of the really good companies that hire Mech engineers right after grad?

My S just graduated from PSU with a ME degree and landed the job he wanted. He had multiple minors. Check out the Engineering Leadership Development Minor (ELDM) and the Engineering Entrepreneurship Minor. Both minors incorporate business concepts, overlap quite a bit, and aren’t that difficult to work into the ME schedule. (Courses count as tech elects) . Employers also seem to find them applicable to the workplace.

BTW…he also wants to get an MBA down the road and the minors have given him a good basic business background.

Thanks for your post Karp. Good to hear from someone who knows first hand!did he still graduate in 8 academic semesters? I looked at both of those minors and for the initial stuff it doesn’t say there is over lap. There may be in the last 12 credits you choose tho.

Sent you a PM.
