I posted this in someone else's thread a while ago which was a mistake since I did not get many responses....I thought I would create my own thread.

I got a 530 in reading but my math scores are middle 50%...34 on act math and 740 on math SAT.

Will the 530 kill my wharton application? My GPA is also 4.2.

Please respond thanks.

How did you do on the ACT reading section?

I got a 25 on ACT reading

What was your ACT composite? Are you a US citizen whose first language is English?

27 composite…which sucks and 1910 overall SAT…I am a US citizen from NJ speaking English. Also, I do have time to take the SAT again in November (SAT 2’s in October)

You could retake the SAT. If I were you I’d focus on the ACT (no need for SATII) and try to do really well in October or November.

Well I already signed up for Math 1 and math2 in October but I guess I could retake the ACT again. Just curious why do u think I should focus on ACT?

Technically you did better on the SAT than the ACT so I can understand wanting to stick with the SAT. My only reasoning for the ACT is it is the only test you need (for Penn). If you don’t do as well on your SATIIs in October nor your SAT in November that leaves you with one test date to decide whether to retake the SAT or SATII. If you slip up on the Setember ACT that still gives you two more test dates to try again.

Taking the MathI and MathII is a waste IMO. Take one or the other and choose another SATII.

I think that 530 will exclude you from a lot of things. Take the test again and study really hard for that section. A weighted GPA of 4.2 isn’t great either.

Are you a URM? Or, were you born in another country?

well i took chemistry and got a 670 but I have a 4 on AP test. Im going to send m1 m2 and chem…and susiebra read the thread before u ask a question that was answered.

mets2000, you sound a bit like me :P

Go for the ACT. There is no way to study for the reading section to just let it tank. Here are my ACT scores:

E: 34
M:35
R:29
S: 34

composite: 33

I not only got into Wharton but the Joseph Wharton Scholar program too so you’re still in the game!

Yeah…so you speak English. I don’t know I just feel like if your ACT is already so low, you might want to just go w/ the SATs. Studying does help. I mean when I started on practice tests I wasn’t in the 2300s, but around 2100. Then, after you practice, you get better and get the score that you want. Just a thought.

i mean, honestly, even if u were 100 points higher, it’d be bad. just take the satII’s again and again- they have that new policy. and u didn’t say if u were a urm, but i’m guessing u aren’t… imo, the reading section of the SATs is the most straightforward. i mean just reading in general might help u. good luck.

Lol there is really no way to study for reading. For the SAT, design an effective strategy and study hard for the vocab. I did this and got an 800 on the SAT CR and a 34 on the ACT Reading. I by no means am a “strong” reader. All you need is some luck and a game plan.
