I need to get a job this summer (and I'll probably keep it into my senior year) to pay for college application fees. I don't really have a lot of AMAZING extracurriculars at the moment and I haven't really done any community service or volunteer work. Anyway, I was wondering how colleges view work outside of school - do they consider it an extracurricular? Do they think it shows work ethic and responsibility, and will it help to buffer my lack of extracurriculars/volunteer work?

A job always helps.....expecially if you can get a rec from your employer

it doesn't replace EC's but explains a lack of ECs for the time period in which you are employed.

But since your only taking a job from this summer i guess if you have a lack of ECs before this you might want to explain that.........

It also shows you as a responsible person....but you gotta be dedicated to it....timewise...and it should show in your progress ie promotions....

also note ....you cant get AMAZING extracurriculars in a year.....we've all tried.....;-)

good luck

It wouldn't necessarily be considered an extracurricular...especially since it normally doesn't go in the 'Extracurriculars' portion of the application. However, it is viewed in practically the same way. I think the main focus of it is that you can manage your time, show responsibility, and aren't consumed with academics only.
