does a teaching father fall into the legacy category??

does a teaching father (teaching at princeton that is) apply to legacy? does it in any way (positive or negative) affect my chances?? thx for replying

I believe being the child of a Princeton professor or other teacher increases your chances considerably. It definitely doesn’t hurt you. It’s not a legacy, but you’d have a leg up in admissions.

Ya same thing for me but at another ivy. I think it only reduces cost for attendees

^Really? Maybe that’s just Cornell that takes a huge amount of students from Ithaca, since they are partially public… I thought that having ties to the university helped, though.

Helps a ton!!! I think more than legacy.

thanks that sounds very encouraging ^^ i appreaciate it…

Im pretty sure it isnt much of a help besides discounts, if it is at all. I’ve talked with admissions counselours, they said it helps with money and thats it. We even talked to the admissions counselour at the particular school, and they really didnt care.

While I’m not positive if it counts as legacy or not, I’m quite sure it plays a positive roll in admissions.

I live in the area and know of many kids who had considerably lower test scores and grades but still got in, and their parents taught at the university.

Most admissions counselors don’t know s***.

It depends on the school - for Princeton, I can strongly attest that many of the kids of Princeton professors get in.

wow thanks i didnt expect it to be such a boost… i mean im still going to try anything even remotely possible to get it, but that is a major motivator ^^

Sorry, typo. I meant officer not counselor on my above post. If your father teaches there ask him to introduce you

Be careful about counting on a boost in admissions. How long has your father taught at PU? Is he a teaching fellow, assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor? There are many untenured young assistant professors who come through Princeton for a few years, who never receive teunure. There is no guarantee admissions gives weight to children of those temporary hires.

@ fauve, yh i considered that… my father is indeed an assistant prof “only”… maybe associate… i dunno. but thanks for putting me back on the ground ^^ i thought of that like immediately after posting my last post…
still, you know, everybody is allowed to dream XD

really only tenured professors get a boost
