Does a "W" or "F" on transcript affect GPA for Osteopathic Schools

Hello Everyone,

I was having a debate with some of my pre-med classmates regarding grade replacement for osteopathic schools. My classmates were arguing that if you get a “W” or “F” grade then that gets averaged into your GPA and you won’t get into medical school because a “W” looks bad. I kept telling them that if you get a “W” or “F” grade then you can retake the class and get an “A” grade and the final grade is what gets averaged into your GPA. Even if you have a bad grade, as long as you retake the course and pass, then that won’t affect your chances to medical school. Because I know one guy who got a “W” and an “F” and when he retook both courses and got a “B+” in one and a “A” in the other course he still got into medical school.

I think what I said was correct. Was I right? Any thoughts?

pp.18-21 for a discussion of how repeated coursework is recorded and used in calculations.

Ws are not included in GPA calculations.

A failing grade that is later replaced by a higher grade in a course with the same content and credit weighting–only the most recent grade is included in GPA calculations.

A failing grade that is NOT later re-taken is included in GPA calculations.

BTW, W or F grades do not preclude one from getting into med school–even an allopathic one that does not allow grade replacement.

See I was right! Thank you @wayoutwestmom
