I am going to be a computer science and engineering freshman at UC Irvine this fall. I am wondering will the fact that the CSE degree is not ABET accredited significantly lower my chances at a job or graduate school?

woahh what the. computer sci doesnt have abet accreditation?
what does this mean?

The computer science degree is accredited but the computer science and engineering is not accredited

There was talk during one of our info sessions that there was an advisory board planning to review our curriculum soon and we’ll probably be accreditted before you graduate

To clarify (since this comes up on search results quite a bit):

CSE is now the only UCI program accredited in Computer Science by ABET. It is also an accredited Computer Engineering degree.

By contrast, no other degree in the ICS school, including Computer Science (B.S.), is accredited (and none of them are currently seeking to be accredited).

Source: [Accredited Programs details](http://main.abet.org/aps/AccreditedProgramsDetails.aspx?OrganizationID=5764)

Note the date is retroactive to 10/01/2009.

I’ll let you in on a secret… you care more than employers do.
The HR department isn’t going to research things like this. What they will do is ask “what are some good universities in the area from which we can draw talent?” From there they will assess the performance of past graduates from those schools and then recruit from places that have yielded good results.

^ this is true. Having graduated in CSE, I’m glad the program was finally accredited but I have yet to come across an employer that actually knows what ABET is.
