Does (almost) every college use Student Search Service?

I took my first SAT1 last year while I had the SSS on at the same time, I scored disastrously(compared to most of the forum posters here) and so, many low-ranked colleges bombarded my home mailbox, wanting me to apply there.

So now, I would like to retake my SATs and aim for better scores and better colleges, and I've also unticked the SSS to protect my privacy.

If I retake the SATs with a good score(with no SSS enabled this time), will all colleges, including the ones who hadn't mailed me, know my previous scores? And how will it affect my chances of admission?

if you send in your SAT scores to any colleges this year they will see all your SAT scores, from every testing. Going into effect i think maybe next year will be a way to send in just one SAT set of scores but colleges can opt out. admission chances depend on the school, some take your best scores only into account when reviewing your app and some will look more closely at all(higher level unis usually). if you do substantially better the second time i would think unis would just give you the benefit of the doubt for your 1st testing. unless it is like, ivy league or like MIT or something…

Student Search Service DOESN’T tell colleges your score. Nor do they actually look at any of the scores. They simply tell CB or whoever what range of scores they want, and emails are sent to anyone who scores within that range. SSS has no factor in admissions.

thanks for you both first,
but i’m still confused, say, if Im targeting to some medium-good colleges like NYU or Boston University, then will they know my range of previous “disastrous” score because I’ve ticked the Student Search Service previously, even though I only submit my best score using the new score choice program?

nb i still haven’t submitted any scores to any colleges yet.

yes, what latency said is right, SSS doesnt actually give away scores, they give away the information(address, email, etc.) of students who are in the range of their criteria. i thought the new score choice program wasnt going into effect until next year, i guess that is when you are applying? The SSS does not give out any scores, when you apply, if the new score choice program is in effect and NYU and Boston U don’t opt out, they’ll only see what you choose to send them. If they opt out, the SAT scores you send must be from every testing you have ever taken. does that make any sense? sorry if it is confusing
