Does already having been accepted help?

I was accepted last year as a transfer to Swarthmore, with a 3.6 college GPA. I didn't go. After that, I had mono, and my GPA fell to 3.35. However, I will probably have midterm grades around 3.7 to send with my application. Does having been accepted once help at all, or do they truly judge you all over again?

omg...ur transfering again...aren't u at U of Chicago. Listen, if you dont like chicago, you ain't going to like swarthmore. They are like equals. Dartmouth is like Williams. Amherest, idk. Swarthmore is like Chicago, same hard core academics.

how is dartmouth like williams?
and I think it will be a positive in your favor that you were accepted, but on the negative side, college grades matter quite a bit more now that its a soph transfer

No, I left UChicago and am likely going back to Smith. OMG I didn't ask for your judgments. I am from the country and I hated living in the city. And I don't know where you get the idea that UChicago and Swarthmore are like equals. It's not intensity of classes that bothers me. I was originally interested in Swarthmore because of the progressive bent, the dedication to "ethical intelligence" and because I wanted a small school where I could get to know my profs. I felt UChicago was a bit competitive and not particularly progressive. Also UChicago has almost no social life unless you're a preppy. Maybe I wouldn't like Swarthmore or maybe I would. Swarthmore isn't the only school I'm looking at. I'm wanting a small, progressive, coed school w/ a ruralesque setting and serious academics. Either way, whether I'd like Swarthmore is not what I was asking.

And rockofeller -I appreciate the input and all, but I'm not sure that really answered anything. Is having been accepted before a positive b/c it means your app must be reasonably strong, or is it a positive b/c admissions boards feel obligated to to look more carefully at previous admits? I was rejected from Swarthmore out of high school, so I may just be looking at a hopeless case all around.

Also bball87, I will at least let you know that UChicago usually lets in transfer students who were accepted once before. I hope you take my spot there and you love it. Although since you are also looking at schools like UPenn and Brown, I wonder if you truly know what you want...

you there, bball? i'd like to see your response...

Some schools would rather offer a slot to someone who hasn't had the chance to go yet. I don't know about Swarthmore. But transferring more than once might raise a flag that you are not likely to finish there, either.

You might want to look at yesterday's NYT for an article about the cost of changing colleges -- both in terms of social adjustment and in terms of opportunities to work with faculty. Based on that, if you don't see yourself staying at Chicago, it might make more sense for you to transfer back to Smith where you presumably already have some foothold.

hey all, i heard the same thing escape, but then i called up someone there (like a secretory), and she was telling me how its sooo competitive to get in as a transfer and she said my prior acceptance was no guarantee at all and in fact, i should not bet i get in again. I was really like wow, way to hook up a student you really accepted. She even suggested to me, that maybe I should retake the sats to be competitive without even knowing my previous score. Well, I felt like telling her, and then she was like thats in the middle of our applicant pool.

I'm not at UChicago, sac. I'm going back to Smith in the spring. One of the great things about LACs, is I feel that even transferring in as a junior I'd be able to work with faculty.

Sorry I got that wrong. Good luck with your transfer.
