I gave the Nov 2013 international SAT and got a 2290, but with an 8 in the essay. Will this average essay score harm my application to American colleges?

I’m not too sure as well. However I don’t really mind getting 8, because subjective marking of time constrained tests is just ********, and I’m sure loads of people know this. I’m more concerned about your university essays though. If you wrote superbly in your essays yet get 8 in your SAT, I’m not sure if they would be suspicious…though they will have no cause to be.

2290 is a great score. You have no concern to be worried though, and I’m 90% sure that admissions office know the effect of time constraints on the quality of work.

The Ad Coms reading your app would need to pull the SAT score report to see that 8. The college portals for the schools my son is presently applying to all show the three sub scores only. One even drops the Writing score, and only reports M & CR. So, while I can not definitively say that the 8 will never be seen, I will be shocked if it is.

Thank you for your prompt answers.

My son is doing well in AP English, and he got a 7. He is targeting engineering, so we are not worried, and admissions officers have told us that. Remember the essay is timed and your essays for applications and school are not; you can spend hours on an admission essay or just 30 mintues, it is up to you.

I would be very interested to see percentiles on essay scores, but they do not provide them. I have heard that how much is written (are the pages full?) and the writing (is it script or printed?) matters. My son’s school wants everything typed, and if not, printed. They do not use any cursive at all, though he learned it. I feel that might have hurt him in his essay, and he knows he should practice cursive if he takes the exam again.

cursive does not matter at all on the essay. In fact, I think it would probably hurt you (because it can be harder to read). Handwriting, though, does matter. The easier to read it, the better.

I scored a 12 using print.

I got a 10 but then I bombed my rest of the writing section so i got a total of 660 in Writ.
you got a 8 and surely your score is above 700, imagine what a 10 would have bought you !!, even with 8, your scores are just amazing
Best of Luck
