Does an academic dismissal count as getting expelled or an expulsion?

So a friend screwed up in college, and it’s only his first year. It’s just that his “dream job” major was so difficult for him that he got academically disqualified from his college after failing to get himself out of academic probation the first semester. He was advised to attend a community college to either get reinstated or to go elsewhere. Was also advised to stay away from science/health majors that focus heavily on sciences, since that’s what screwed his grades. Although he’s sad that he can pursue the fields he loves, he at least agrees that he’s much better in English or History.

Anyway, my real question is that he was filling in his application for our community college nearby and was stumped whether or not to check the box that says if he was expelled or got an expulsion. By definition, he knows that dismissal and expelled/expulsion are different words, but he’s just worried. And I’m worried for him too, so I wrote this. I’ve asked many adults, but they all say different things. And argued. Hopefully someone can tell me and give some solid evidence such as having gone through academic disqualification or worked with someone who did???
